Try installing the touchpad drivers. That will usually take care of it.

Are you using a touchpad or mouse? If it's the touchpad check the manufacturers site for drivers. Also make sure you have actual video card drivers instaled versus the generic ones that  come with XP. The easiest way  to  do  this is Right Click "My Computer" and click properties from the drop down menu. This will open the system properties window. You wil next  click the hardware tab in the System propoerties window and choose device manager. Look for anything with a yellow icon next to it. Report back with what you find.

PS
Sorry for the sloppy typing I  just  had a couple shots of whiskey.

If you can list what they are, we can let you know what type of driver to look for.
Also, drivers should be available on the manufacturers site. I know both dell and gateway go back a few years for drivers, I would guess the others do too.

Laptops are notorious for having devices that a generic Windows disk doesn't recognize. It's a major drag to dig up these drivers even for people who are computer "nerds".
So the laptop manufacturer supplies a "recovery disk" that lets you reinstall windows and the drivers, putting the laptop back just like when it came out of the box. No help if you've lost that disk though. One thing you can try is to see if there's a hidden partition on your hard drive with the original installation files on it. This is a pretty common trick for "brand name" computers. If there is, you may be able to make the partition visible using Partition magic ($$) or Gparted (free) and point the driver update wizard at the .cab files in there. No guarantees here, but it might work. You can look at the partitions in XP - search for "partition" in "help and support", click the "mark a partition as active" topic and expand the "using the Windows interface" heading to see how to open the disk management console. You'll see a graph of your hard drive with the partitions shown. There are ways to hide a partition from here - check in Device Manager for the total size in gigabytes of your drive, then see if the total of all the partition sizes you see (probably one or two) is close to the device manager reported size of the drive. Remember that if you look at the drive label itself the numbers won't add up, the label thinks one gB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, the computer counts one gB as 1,073,741,824 bytes: a 100gB drive as indicated on its label is only 93gB to the computer.

You can sometimes tell by the chipset drivers installed too.
The intel gfx is usually dell's bottom line.
This page should list the drivers.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_9400&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Otherwise, you can navigate intles muddy site for the drivers.
Nvidea and ati sites are easier to get through.

All possible e1705 drivers are here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_9400&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

As verboten said, using the express service tag (it's on the underside of your computer, probably 7 digits, numbers and letters) entered here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

after you click "choose by service tag"

should show you which drivers are needed for your laptop (though they do get lazy and just list all of them from time to time.)
No.

I deal with dell computers day in and out. Corporate models though, not consumer. the service tag is just a faster way of getting to the drivers from all the models I have searched for, both desktops and laptops. Thats why I posted the page with the drivers on it.
