Speed Week 2010
« on: April 23, 2010, 04:16:33 AM »
My dad has been going to Bonneville for the last few years, I have wanted to go all my life. This summer I am going, I have a plan, but as we all know the best laid plans...

Snag #1 - Speed Week is the 14 - 20 of August, my last full semester of school starts the 16th, talked to my teachers and got that covered.

Snag #2 Had hoped to make a major trip out of it and visit some friends from southern COlorado, Phoenix, St. George and SLC. Problem, people have to work and doing all of that before the races puts me everywhere during the week, still working on that.

Here is where I hope some of my SOHC4 family can help me out. Without being able to set down in the cities I want, when I want I'll have some free time the week before the races. Phoenix may be out of the plan, just not timed right, but a trip through southern Colorado, northern New Mexico/Arizona, and southern Utah would be great. The trip will have to end in Wendover on the 13th of Aug so I can get settled before the racing starts. I will then have to blast back home to Denver on the 21st, I plan to see SLC friends that weekend and be home the 22. I have been through that region, but it was when I was trucking and that doesn't really lend itself to seeing what's there, except the working areas.

Does anyone have a suggestion for somewhere I should see? A place that can't be missed? A route or stretch of road that I must experience? Any and all suggestions will be welcomed.

All of Utah is full of neat stuff. In Southern is  Bryce Canyon, Zion, Lake Powell, Cedar Breaks, Moab/Arches, and there is a road that goes along the Colorado River that is spectacular. Northern Utah is Uinta Mountains, Bear Lake, and Flaming Gorge Reservoir, which I think the route around through Manilla is more spectacular, but the east side is pretty through Dutch John and antelope flats, but north much further and it's less scenic. Comming down into Vernal from there is real twisty.

Most of my time in the inner  Wasach  roads was after dark it seems, but lots of curves.

And don't forget to get some kicks on Route  666 in Southeast Utah.

They changed Route 666 here to something else, some law maker who doesn't even live in the area thought the devil was getting too much pub from it. Like they don't have better things to do!

I was thinking of coming in to Utah from southwest Colorado and heading up to SLC the "back way", spending the night in SLC and then blasting out to Wendover. The big trip didn't pan out, I've had some other things come up, which always stinks, but thanks for the input!
