Tachometer Housing - Help!
« on: March 11, 2010, 10:45:32 AM »
I bought a replacement for the tachometer housing, but cannot get the old one off. The bolt is stripped.
Any advice on how to remove/replace it?

Start with an impact screwdriver.

If that doesn't work, you can try to grab on to the sides of the head with some needle nosed vice grips.

If THAT doesn't work, get yourself a very VERY small chisel. Carefully drive the chisel into one side of the head of the screw, at an angle, in the direction of rotation.

You can also try to heat the material around the screw, but do so carefully.

...........and if all that fails, drill out the screw and retap the hole.

Get a cold chisel, and place it in one of the slots as if it were a straight screwdriver.  Now tilt it about 60 degrees and chisel off the face of half the screw.  This gives you some more room.   Now that half of it is gone, take the chisel again (you may need a smaller one at this point),  and place it in the same slot.  Tilt the chisel at an angle almost parallel with the face of the screw and tap one side of the slot in a counter clockwise direction.
Took me a while to figure that one out.  Lot faster than a dremel too.  I can post pictures in the morning if you want.

Okay here in the first pic you can see two screws, the rounded head phillips and one I just have for example as I mangled mine pretty good getting it out.

What you want to do is push with the screwdriver/small chisel against a "face" you're going to carve in the head of the screw.  Imagine the cross of the screw slots dividing the head into four slices of pie.  You carve out a slice with the chisel so you can push against that face to loosen the screw.

Couple different pics of the same angle to use to lop off a piece of the screw.

Just because your screw's shape may be altered already, you may need to nake the chisel and going straight down, what it a couple of times to reform it somewhat.    And you might not get it right the first time.  Which is why mine looks like I carved an L out of it.

One more thing, don't try to do this with it sitting on the ground or bench.  Do yourself a favor and put it in a vice.  Hope this helps.

Oh, and I don't do disclaimers.
