differences in fitment between cb360, cl360, cb350T, cb350F etc?
« on: February 23, 2010, 07:44:43 PM »
I know this will sound like such a newb question, but Ive tried searching and even comparing manuals and I still cant figure it out since its so generic...
Would I be able to fit a cl360 or cb350T or some other smaller cb/cl front wheel on my '74 cb350f?

I want to run a front drum setup, and it seems that these other bikes have wheels/drum assemblies more readily available on ebay and what not..

I am well aware than I can get a perfect drum brake setup if i wait around long enough or send enough money, but I just want an easy bolt on so i can get her back out on the road, so save the "oh just take this $$$$ drum and re-lace and true and everything else"

or anyone want to trade?  ;D

thanks guys,
Davis

Davis,

You could, but why do you want to?  The disk is a better option than the drum... that is why later model everythings have discs as opposed to drums.  Any of those drums should work on your wheel, although you might need a different bracket for the torque arm.

Seriously though, don't do it.  The disc is much better, easier to maintain, and lighter.

I think the one I was using on my track bike was originally from an early DOHC450; it is slightly larger than the drum fitted to the 350/360 twins.  They look kinda neat when bored with cooling holes.   It was fun for a while, but partway through last season I reverted back to a disc.

I had a 450 drum on my CB500 cafe bike for a few years and currently have a 360 drum on my CB400F.  I found that swapping the whole fork assembly was easiest. That way, the lowers and the brake and wheel all were made for each other.

I like 'em, and they allow you to clean up your perches real minimalist like.

Its your bike, do what you like.

Yes, discs have better stopping power, but if you want something that performs like a new bike, buy a new bike.

yes yes i know that disks are head and shoulders above drums, their stopping power is greater and brake fade is eliminated.

However, my bike is small, fairly underpowered, not a daily rider, and meant for around town only; I seriously doubt if this bike will ever see the interstate. That said...
When I bought the bike, it had all the brake parts in a box, not installed. I installed them, leaks everywhere, siezed MC, cracked lines. Bought another used MC with lines on ebay because it cost me the same as a rebuild kit. Took a while for me to get them bled, and the mc proceeded to leak on me. had to email the ebay seller, and wait for him to send me a new one. I recieved my 3rd MC, and after many trials and tribulations, got it bled and it was working beautifully. After FINALLY getting my motor running smooth and riding well, the SAME day my MC #$%*s up and starts leaking for the third time, now its all mushy.

I'm tired of the lines and the master cylinder and nasty fluid all over everything and spending so much time only to have it fail later. I'd like something mechanical where theres some amount of certainty as to whether it will work. I cant be confident in my disk brake any more.

Find the entire front end of a cb500/550 or 750. Install the entire thing. Better everything. Problem fixed, not expensive.

500/550's and 750's have 35mm forks, no?

 I think the 350F has 33mm like the 400F.

Instead of messing with removing the steering stem, I would just slide the forks from a 360T up in there and call it a day...

From what I understand, a number of these wheels will be a direct fit to my existing forks, which are fine.

I dunno. I have to use spacers putting a drum up front on the 750/550 front ends.
Dunno if any of those you listed is a "direct fit". Could be.
No.

Curious how this ended up; I have a friend that has a CL175 he might sell me for parts, and I'm somewhat tempted to swap the front wheel with my disc setup on my 350F. what kinda mess would i be getting into, or is it a simple swap?

So you want to use a drum brake that was barely good enough to stop a 230 lb bike with a maximum speed of about 60 on a 400 lb bike that can go near 100?

Not a simple swap. You'll need spacers. I don't actually know the axle size on the 175's, either. Might be different.

good point - i don't know squat about the 175s. figured i might be closer to drums of a 300+ but i guess not. all i knew was that the wheel is the same size, and the 350f is just an around town bike.

Well, around town is where you'll actually have to use the brakes with regularity.
No.
