'78 750F 1st gear problem
« on: March 11, 2010, 04:19:47 PM »
I just recently picked up a '78 750F in pretty nice shape. Cleaned her all up, cleaned out the carbs, and fired her up. Runs real nice!!! It's not so good for first gear though. It doesn't seem to engage properly, like it's only going halfway in. As soon as you let the clutch out, it jumps right out of gear, and knocks. A lot of times, when you do put it into first, the neutral light flickers, until you stab the shifter to try to engage the gear more firmly. It's acting like a bent shift fork, but I have never seen that happen for first? Is there any common problem within the selector mechanism I should look for?

Welcome to the forum!
Most likely the problem is, indeed, in the selector. Sounds like the shift drum isn't rotating far enough; that's why the neutral light flickers. My best guess would be a broken spring on the thingy that hooks onto the drum pins and turns the drum.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks. I pull it apart again and have a real close look at it. When I had it apart earlier, I didn't find anything broken, or bent. All the other gears work fine by the way.

Just for the record, IMO, the crap was directed at me, for not knowing the proper name for the part in question....

1st gear on any Honda is not a common problem you will just have to disassemble and inspect
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

I sent a mail off to the p/o. He responded back that he had no idea what was wrong. Ya right! F'n liar!! You could plainly see when compared to the bolts on the stator cover, that the shift cover was recently installed. Honda doesn't use clear silicone either. Liars piss me off.

If you read the "help needed with gearshift assembly" thread, you will learn, as I did, that the proper name for the "thingy" is "shift pawl".
