Topic: Exhaust issue. Any ideas?

I recently found a very nice exhaust and muffler combo for a 1975 cb550f SS. I really only want the muffler since my exhaust is in good shape and is already installed. Here's the problem. I can't get the damn muffler off! I have taken all brackets off but the thing won't budge. Its like the thing is welded to the header. Any ideas? The muffler is in great shape and I don't want to ding it up.

try heating it with a heat gun on the highest setting of you have one, squirting the area where theyre joined together with wd-40 or your favourite penetrating oil. eventually it should come apart.

I heated the hell out of it and sprayed a can of pb blaster on it.....no luck.

Its pretty common. They stick on like they were welded.

Try a 50/50 mix of ATF and MEK.

Generally if you can get some twist involved it helps.

Beating the exhaust with a dead blow hammer on the part you don't want might help

what is ATF and MEK

I haven't heard of ATF and MEK before. MEK is methyl ethyl keytone, nasty stuff.

ATF...automatic transmission fluid

I have heard from several sources that a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone (still nasty but much less so) creates the best penetrating lubricant/parts loosener on the planet.  And for very low cost too.

I used this to get my engine to turn over. After 4 years of sitting outside with no carbs it took less than 30 minutes for the pistons to break free..
