Oil Drain Threads Stripped - HeliCoil help needed
« on: March 12, 2010, 10:41:24 AM »
Hey guys,
The oil drain threads are messed up bad on my '75 CB125s (I love this bike and Im not a big guy - so no laughing).  The oil plug is the same part number (92800-1200) as the one on my '72 CB350F (and the same as my 98' Foreman 400 - Im guessing Honda used this drain a lot), so I imagine that someone here can help me.  The CB125 has no oil pan, so Helicoil (or TimeSert) is my only option other than new tap and plug.  I've got my mind set on HeliCoil....

I believe the plug to be 12mm, 1.5 pitch, and 1.5 length.
The plug may be a 1.25 pitch....Im not sure.  I don't have a gauge  :-\
I think that this drain plug is actually on most Honda bikes...again its 92800-1200.
Anyone know this plug's specs?

The big question:
Which HeliCoil Kit do I need?  What spec coil should I install?

I have searched and read other threads relating to HeliCoils, but I would like it spelled out to me to ensure I don't screw up - I don't have the money to be screwing up.

Thanks guys.

I don't know about the pitch but a helicoil kit for a 12mm bolt will not be especially cheap either. Better to get your local cycle shop to do it if they are will to in the frame. I had to helicoil a Bimota swingarm last year - M20 x 1.5 thread and the kit cost £80! It was way cheaper than a new swingarm though which are about as common as the flies on rocking horse poo....

Good source of kits cheaply is I'm afraid to say, ebay.

Thanks Moonpie.
I've found this:
http://www.amazon.com/Metric-Fine-Thread-Repair-Kit/dp/B000I194X0/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I35ED6EDF66A02&colid=3U5HEBG4305ZI

 * Metric Fine Thread Repair Kit
 * Thread Size M12x1.25 x 18.0mm Length
 * 6 Inserts Per Kit

And this:
http://www.amazon.com/Heli-Coil-554412-M12-1-5-Metric/dp/B000CMHVLM/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1268427738&sr=1-1

# Metric Fine Thread Repair Kit - M12x1.5 x 18.0mm Tap Part No. - 4976-12
# Installation Tool Part No. - 4973-12
# Tool Type - 3
# Insert Package Part No. - R3745-12
# Drill Size - 31/64" (Drill bit not included.)
# 6 Inserts Per Kit

I think one of these will do it... but I'm still not sure which one I need....
Still need to know the specs on the 92800-1200 drain plug...

Anyone done this on the oil drain before?  I would like pointers from someone who has done it.
Thanks,
Jake

I too would think it would be easy as hell to retap the aluminum oil pan.

Dont get a self tapping Oil plug! That is how I cracked my oil pan. I should of listened to my gut  But Napa counterman was sure it would work!   Theyre used to be an oil plug  that worked like a drywall anchor. Goes in and springs open, then pulls together making a flush seal.  The salesman talked me out of getting one. Since he didnt have them. Anyway, you cant afford to crack that! Look for that cheap drywall anchor style kind. Take a 12 pack to the jiffy lube guys and they might hook you up! Thats what ill do if it happens again.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
