How long would you let this go?
« on: March 12, 2010, 05:27:21 PM »
Recent oil leak.  Thanks to all the helpful info from the members of this forum I've done carb rebuild, clutch plates, tapered headset bearings, fork rebuild, full tune up, etc.  However I am a little intimidated to take on this oil leak.  Should I do this soon?  Any advice would be appreciated.

not sure on the 550 but i imagine the source is the same as on a 750. there are rubber "pucks" under the cam holders and those start to leak. as long as it isnt really dripping out badly i'd leave it alone until rebuild time if you can.

Depends how much it leaks.

If its just a seep I'd ride it

Ride it until you get sick of cleaning the oil out of your jeans.

Cut some lengths of cotton rope to fit.  Wedge a piece in the fins where it's leaking.  After a while when it's saturated pull it out and replace with another one.  Repeat until rebuild time! :)

I had the same leak on my '77 cb550. On each end of the engine there is an o-ring sandwiched between the cylinder and the cylinder head that seals an oil passage. That is probably the source of your leak. It's nothing to worry about so you can let it go indefinitely but it is annoying if you like to keep your engine clean. Unfortunately if you pull the cylinder head off to replace those o-rings you'll have to replace the head gasket as well.

I rolled up paper towels and stuffed them in between the fins on rides and that worked pretty well for soaking it up.

You should, it works great!  It's also good for a leaking tach cable oil seal while you're waiting for the new one to arrive or waiting until you need more parts to place an order.

+1 on the rope trick.  No reason to tear into an otherwise solid engine.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Don't blame this one on me... I read it on this site somewhere... someone used tampons (new I assume ::)) to soak it up until they could fix it.

Problem is, those o-rings only last another maybe 10,000 or 15,000 miles even after you replace them.

I've heard talk of people using better quality o-rings that don't decay as rapidly as the OEM o-rings.  Perhaps they were viton?

I have a theory that this may be related to hotter running temperatures on the 77 and 78 models due to the "lean-burn" carburetors.  I went to great lengths to re-jet my bike so that it ran as cool as possible (much cooler than stock).  I don't yet know the long-term effects of the cooler running on those o-rings.  See the jetting link in my sig for cooler running info.

If you have had this o-ring problem, can you please post your year and perhaps any pertinent jetting information?  Pods or airbox?  stock exhaust or 4->1?  Did the o-ring failure follow soon after any jetting-related changes such as adding an aftermarket pipe or muffler?

I'll start:
* 1977 CB550K  bought with 13126 mi.
   PD46C carbs
   stock jetting
   o-rings NOT LEAKING YET
RIDDEN IN EXTREME CONDITIONS, 100F+ in summer in nasty city stop-and-go traffic, and as cold as 6F in winter.
* 15,825 mi. had stock mufflers with one rotted through at about 16,000 miles, replaced with MAC 4-1.
* Started leaking oil around 20,000 mi.
* 23,358 mi. replaced paper air filter with UNI foam filter in airbox.
* 24,515 mi. oil leak became unbearable any longer, so I replaced head gasket with Vesrah set. (1997)
* 26,453 mi. Installed EMGO pods.
* 26,468 mi. re-jetted to 105 mains, optimized for best "seat of pants" tuning and lowest running temps of 303F at head gasket and 278F at base gasket. (2007)
* I've had no head-gasket o-ring failure since then, but who knows when it will fail again?  Bike doesn't see those extreme conditions any longer, but also doesn't get ridden anywhere near my old daily rain-or-shine commute.  Now she's a "garage queen".

On my K8, I just roll up a couple of tiny balls of paper towel and jam them in between the fins with a screwdriver. You can't even see them!
Wash bike, change them out. Same as post above, just without the rope ;D
I just can't see a top end rebuild for a small issue ;)

Non of my others leak?

oil mist is OK liquid oil visibly leaking strip and rebuild BUT you need to pull the cylinders and do the base gasket and "O" rings in there as well

So far oil is not misting my pants.  I just hope that if I let it go it will hold out 'till next winter.  I don't want to miss any riding time this summer.

Next winter the engine is coming out anyway for a frame powder coat.
