The Death of Apehangers in Indiana?
« on: March 13, 2010, 02:36:20 PM »

http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2010/PDF/SB/SB0031.1.pdf

SENATE BILL No. 31
_____
DIGEST OF SB 31 (Updated January 19, 2010 11:16 am - DI 71)
Citations Affected: IC 9-19.
Synopsis: Motorcycle handlebar height. Provides that motorcycle
handlebars may not rise higher than the shoulders of the driver when
the driver is seated in the driver's seat. (Current law provides that the
handlebars may not rise more than 15 inches above the driver's seat.)
Effective: July 1, 2010.

Maybe not the death of....but my interpretation of apehangers means hanging onto bars that would be above shoulder height yet the new law is an improvement over the previous 15" above seat height.  ??? ???

I hate apehangers, but to each their own.  I don't see why they would illegalize it.  Probably not as easy handling as a good set of pullbacks, but it's not like they DON'T have handlebars at all. Stupid.

good. I am so #$%*ing tired of seeing riders looking like they're doing the Y of YMCA on their choppers.  How do you STEER? How do you CORNER?!  Finally the fashion police have spoken and said "That, sir, is #$%*ing ugly and ridiculous on that bike.  It is also now illegal.  Good day, Sir.  I SAID GOOD DAY!!!"

Just messin' ;D
I can just imagine that being said, though, then someone coming back and saying:

"I built up my chopper/bobber/rat/hooligan THE WAY I WANT TO and I have the FREEDOM to make that choice.  Who cares what you think! Choppers need Apes! They're the American Way!"

....and then people will start calling other people hitler (because Hitler is always mentioned in threads that refer to Harleys, good OR bad) stalin, pol pot, and chairman mao.  We'll have fascists, haters, and damn liberals.  Then Bob or Steve will again sigh, weep real tears for the apparent loss of self-control and humanity on yet another forum thread and lock the thing, but not before someone (or a couple of people) have "had their fill" and deleted their accounts.

ok everyone, lights... camera.... action!

Probably the same reason most other safety-related traffic/vehicle laws are enacted.  Because there are the few idiots out there who will go wayyyyyy too far with something and cause problems.

I've seen guys on bikes with insane ape hangers that definitely interfered with their ability to safely control the bike.

Has been the exact same law in NY for years.

We were in the car the other day and saw a HD bagger coming, Batwing fairing and apes. Yup, his hands were way above the fairing/clear shield and he had to sit up on the seat so, of course, most of his upper torso was getting hit with the wind too. Absolutely stupid looking.

i have some 12" apes on my 01 spirit, with some 1.5" risers, and they're just a TAD too tall, but man i love riding with them!!!  granted, i have my rear end slammed with 9" struts (hard tail) and a shaved seat, but hey, that bike still handles well!!  i have fun cornering with the apes personally!!!  but i agree that a height limit needs to be established...  or we could look at it as without the law, natural selection could kick in and eliminate those idiots on their own!  but it wouldn't get certain states the ability to pull over bikers for even more reasons...

lots of states have laws like that. in my experience those ape hangers really dont allow for quick panic turning. my ironhead sportster chopper had them when i first built it and they went away immediately because the handling is scary as hell with those things.

Well Kit..et al..

I never understood how anyone could ride for any length of time with exaggerated ape hangers..and not be in literal pain from having the arms up that high..and circulation compromised.

I had a buddy who's dad owned a custom muffler shop years ago..and I helped out now and then.  When the cars were up on the rack..we used to work with our arms and hands a little higher than head height..and after about 15 minutes you had to "rest" your arms-hands because it was so uncomfortable.  And some of those guys had been doing that work for years..and still needed to take rest breaks/switch to some other type of work every 15 minutes or so.

So..I just never understood how..or why some folks would try to ride that way.  I guess it's like some others have said here..they just want to be outrageous and attract attention.  Seems kinda stupid to me..not particularly cool.

Don't I know it. I only needed to spend a few days fixing up the ceiling of a workshop  and already I know that having your hands over your shoulders for any amount of time sucks. I would lose the feeling in my hands enough to not be able to use the clutch or brake.

Wait, I dont get this. If previous law was no more than 15 inches above the seat, how is this making apes illegal? My shoulders are more than 15 inches above the seat. that would allow me to make the bars HIGHER than before.
Maybe I am missing something?

I think they may be taking into consideration the lowslung seat style most harleys and cruisers have, instead of the straight-across seat style most CBs have.  I'm pretty sure if I measured 15" straight up from the sloping 650 seat I'd get a different relative handlebar height from someone with a regular 750?  i.e. if your tank is nearly 10-15" above your seat, because you have a low, sloping bobber, this would allow you to have mini apes to ride more upright as long as your hands were even with your shoulders.  If you didn't want to lean forward on a 750 and thought for whatever reason apes would look good on a stock 750, then you would be able to have apes however high that would take, until your hands were even with your shoulders- which is significantly higher on the 750.

maybe?

that's my guess anyway and before coffee, I can't guarantee anything. :D

Here's my thought on the visual though...

this

I suppose that is entirely possible. I didnt look at the whole law, just the synopsis and of course no distinction was made there.
