Depends, if the spider is inside, its species is dead! If it is outside, its species is dead if really big!

It's a Huntsman spider, they do that.  They're mostly legs, though.  The body isn't nearly as big as that picture would make you think it is.

We don't have them up here but from what others have told me they are good to have around.  They don't bite but are great cockroach hunters.

That would be the brown recluse,

I still have a scar the size of a loonie (silver dollar for the non-Canadians) from my trip to N. Carolina.

Luckily the US Marine medics picked up on the bite and started the med process quickly to prevent any serious damage. Lots of antibiotics and antihistamines. Oozed lots of yellow stuff and took a long time to heal afterward.

The only longterm effect is that my Arachnaphobia went away. Funny eh?

Thanks guys.  Doesn't seem to be anything to worry about.  I didn't really note the size but as a reference, that is a window screen behind it.  After some digging around, I know I had a red widow spider under my van last year when I was installing a trailer hitch.

I understand you have a lot of these down there too, aren't they called the red(neck) recluse. I've heard they hide mostly in the swampy areas and build webs out of copper line.
