Speedo drive binding agaist the wheel????? Really??
« on: March 15, 2010, 07:21:41 PM »
Hello all --

I've been having fun with my front wheel, it's been at at the shop for new tires and bearings, etc.

So,I got it home to put it on the bike and I put the speedo drive on the axle, fed the axle through, put the end spacer on, put on the end nut and cranked it down. Then the axle didn't spin. I loosened up the nut and it spins when just a little loose. I then checked the speedo drive. It seems to be seating it's outer edge on the wheel when tightened (you know, the outer edge is just inside that housing that bolts to the wheel opposite the disk. Am I missing a spacer of some sort, like it got lost at the shop? When I look at the exploded view in Clymer's, all the parts seem to be in place. Could the bearings be too narrow, like they are wrong? Seems like this would cause the speedo drive to sit on it's outer edge instead of the bearing as it looks intended to.

Help, please! I don't want to take this wheel back to the shop unless I have to.

~RR

Have you got the drive plate engaged properly?

I think so, the two little tabs on the wheel side are engaging in the two little spaces in the speedo drive. Loosely, I can engage the speedo drive against the wheel along the axle ant I can feel the speedo drive housing rub the wheel.

Keep in mind, i'm new at this.

UPDATE - ANSWER: the bearing is in about 1mm too deep. How is that possible? I've not taken bearings out before, so I haven't seen that axle spacer thing that goes between them, but how does it sit in between the bearings, is it expecting a millimeter or so of gap? Should the mechanic who installed my bearings have stopped pounding them in at some point? Do I have the wrong spacer thing in my wheel?

Helpitty-help-help please!

Thanks,
~RR

Is the spacer in there? you should not be able to fit the bearings too deep as one goes up against a shoulder in the hub and the other is located by the spacer

You should be able to look between the bearings when you remove the axle to see if the spacer is there.
If the spacer is there, chances are, the bearing on the other side isn't fully seated against the hub. If the spacer isn't there, it SHOULD be.
Either way,Take it back to the shop.

I think fishhead nailed it. I can see about one thread of rotation on the bearing retainer on the other side, I imagine this should have been screwed in flush. The spacer is in there.

Back to the shop I go...(darnit)
