PLease help with throttle cable install
« on: March 15, 2010, 03:38:52 PM »
OK So this is my very first motorcycle and I am trying to do most of the maintenance work myself. I started by have the carbs rebuilt and ordered new clutch cable and throttle cables. Im trying to install the new throttle cables and I feel like a total idiot. Can someone please explain to me in leymans terms how to do it. I downloaded the manual and it doesnt seem to help me. I attached the cables to the throttle and tightened them down to the controls. My question is. Whats next? Which should I install first? Pull or push? How do I go about getting the right tension on them? How do I know the throttle is in the right position when applying tension to the cable. PLEASE HELP!!!!

If they are installed into the right control then you've done most of the hard work. Get on the bike and roll the throttle backwards. This will be the same motion that you do to gove the bike gas. Now when you do this hold the end of the throttle cables with your hands. You should feel one pull and the other be pushing out.

Under the tank you should see your carburetor rack. On the top of the carburetor rack, in the middle of the bike, right under the back spine of the frame should be two cable holders. The top cable holder is for the pulling cable (when accelerating) and the bottom cable holder is for the pushing cable (when accelerating).

After installation check to see if you can roll your throttle (accelerate) if you can't then you hooked them up wrong.

I know I'm heading into the newby zone , but so be it.
1st You had someone else rebuild your carbs, so now you have no idea what is going on inside? That being said......

The push and pull should be adjusted to a neutral position.

A perfect adjustment would be when you pull, it pulls the carbs "immediately" and when you let your grip off the throttle it goes back to a neutral carb position "no fuel". If you grab your throttle it should be either off or on without any slack.

That's it.

Not really sure what you are describing. Half and Half really isn't an option.

Install the cables in the twist grip first. relax the adjusters completely. The A cable (the one with the adjusters) goes in the front hole, the B in the back. Heree's where I'm a little foggy: install the B cable first, on the lower part of the pulley/bell crank. Then pop the A cable in.

The adjusters on the A cable should be fully relaxed. There is one at the grip, one at the bellcrank (the partial pulley affair that the cables hook into.)  on the carbs.

You would tighten the adjuster at the bellcrank till the cable allows a small amount of turning of the twistgrip, les than 1/8th turn. Then tighten the adjuster at the twist grip until most, but not all of the slop at the twist grip is gone.

I've been raised  to leave the tiniest bit of slack at the twistgrip. I agree. You should turn the twist grip 1/16 of a turn to pull out the slack and then start to open the carbs. This bit of slack allows the full return to idle.

The B cable has no adjusters on it.

I'm sure I've missed some nuances, like the routing.

Tighten the cable in the closed position rolled all the way forward.

Most people and I even think the manual says that the throttle should be slightly open... but hey its nice being unique   :D
