Which Coils Will Work For CB550?
« on: March 15, 2010, 09:40:55 PM »
I have a 75 CB550 and I'm pretty sick of running on two cylinders and being shocked every now and then from my bad #1/#4 coil. So I was wondering what coils are direct bolt ons for a 75 CB550. I've heard that you can use a variety of different motorcycle makers like Kawasakis and others. But I was wondering if all CB 350-750 coils are the same.

Also, anyone have a 1/4 they want to sell?  :D

Thanks

Hey campbmic, I've got a 750 coil I'll give you; you pay the postage. I'll bench test it first, if you're interested...

Anyone ever repaired a coil? Sorry to threadjack, maybe I'll start a new one with this question.

I have one coil that has  a spark wire dangling by about half of what should be there. Is there any way to repair it? Drill it out and re-insert a better wire?

I don't know if it doesn't work, but it looks like it would be a weak link.

Just hate to throw away something that can maybe work, never enough spares is what I figure.

Hey Scottly I sent you a pm that would be great if you can!

Poor Boi, I tried this actually and I didn't have a dremel so I just drilled it out and inserted a new plug wire. It didn't really work for me but I've seen threads of people doing this on here and it works for them.

I bought a new set (two coils with wires and caps) from cycle recycle for under $100 and it was worth every penny.  I had been having probs with fouling plugs and random dead plugs and the new coils solved it all.  I first tried to repair the old with new wire and had no success with that.  Go with new if u have the cash...much less headache imo.

The 750 coil is marked FL703-12V. The mounting holes are 4" center to center. The resistance between the blue and blk/wht wires is 4.2 ohms (after allowing for meter error). If this sounds like it will fit, let me know and I will run a bench test with a simulated ignition system and make sure it sparks where it's supposed to, and doesn't spark where it shouldn't (like yours  :D).

camp, the plug wires are very stiff when cold (it was 45 degrees when I started working on the coil). To avoid undo stress, where the wires enter the coil (where your wire broke off), warm the wires before trying to route them. I left the coil on the dash of my car to warm things up before I packed the coil up.
Also, once you know the wires are long enough, I would trim 1/4" off the wire ends before screwing on the plug caps, so as to give the screws inside the cap some "new meat" to bite into.
