Oil Filter Spring
« on: January 16, 2006, 06:17:17 AM »
I'm rebuilding me CB750 F engine from a box of bits, and have come to fit the oil filter and notice from the parts book that there should be a spring.

Well I can't find one in my box of bits. Could someone post a photo or at least give me the dimensions so I know what I'm looking for.

I had two complete engines so I should have two somewhere.

I'm assuming this is the spring within the filter housing? If so, see pic below. Sorry, my parts list doesn't provide any dimensions.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

There should be a light spring and a thin steel washer between the spring and filter. Both still available from Honda and dont cost a lot.
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

yer, thanks guys. It's really anoying when you dismantle an engine, carefully labeling and baging parts so you don't lose them - and they still magically disappear when you come to reassemble it all.

If you still haven't found it, roughly in inches it measures 7/8" long & just under 1 1/8" outside diameter.

John,
If you get the part number for the washer, can you please let me know as mine is missing?
Cheers,
Jim.

Assuming it hasn't changed over model/years, my parts list has it as;

SEAT, oil filter spring
15414-300-000
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Don't feel too bad.  This spring is a pretty common thing for PO's to have lost long before you ever got the bike, so you may not be to blame here, but then again, you may! ;D

John,
Youv'e been rebuilding that bike for so long perhaps they rusted away to dust!!  :) :)
Everyone I speak has not got a  washer on their filter, but it doesn't seem to make a difference?

I had the opposite problem when I finished getting the 550 back together last night.  There were a few pieces left over, but what the heck, as long as it still runs! ;D  If only Honda had me on the engineering team when they first started building these things, I could have saved them a ton of money by eliminating these unnecessary parts. ;)

I've encountered that a few times myself. Clear and obvious over-engineering.  ;D ;)
