OK, who's the richest sohc member?
« on: March 17, 2010, 05:11:50 AM »
those are no sohc's but still "pretty nice" rides

Makes you wonder who's selling? the man himself? Heard he got into some financial trouble/nasty divorce.

If we're going by "toys" I've got a few. ;D$$ I don't have. ::)Maybe one day.Ask Sam.But we are looking for SPONSORS,any interested parties contact Sam. :D.......but I would give something for those bikes....if I had it.The closest I'll come is the autographed Castrol poster from '85 that has the 250 and 500 in it.Freddie said the only other one he had seen was in the Castrol headquarters.Oh and maybe the NS400R Freddie replica! ;D,Bill

Went to his racing school in Las Vegas and found him to be very friendly, nice to talk with but seemed to always be distracted. His wife and kids came in one day and she seemed very cool, and in a nice way...normal..not some beauty queen an attitude. His first girlfriend back in his day's of glory was Ms Louisiana or something...twisted him around like a flag in a tornado! He got really messed up by that one. Remember all these times that he would not show up at the GP's over on Europe for some made up reasons? She messed him up..bad! He was only 18 years old....

He had to close his school and lost his Speed TV job to Scott Russell for some unknown reason(s) but he still won 250 and 500 Championships in same year in modern era....even Kenny Roberts could not do that!

You might have an ego like that if you had a three cylinder bike with only 125 HP and your fellow racers all had 150!

The three cylinder NS500 was designed by the head motocross engineer at the time at Honda. It had reed valves of all things and guess what? This allowed Spencer to get off with a blazing start as it was rider push your bike back in that day and his always started immediately! The next year all two strokes had reed valves if they were to go fast.

He with Erv Kanemoto developed what we now call, "trail braking" to make up for slow straight line speeds compared to the Fours of Sheen and Roberts.

IE: trail braking, compresses front to keep more weight on front tyre for more traction = more corner speed. And reduces wheelbase for shorter wheel base = easier to carve the corner.

Let's give the guy some credit! Never, and I mean never seen anyone with so much natural talent. Not Roberts, Lawson, Schwantz or Gardner and I have enormous respect for either one of them. After the South African crash it went 'down hill' but once in awhile there was that spark again.
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

I didn't say he was a no good racer Rob, just that his ego is unfeasibly large and I base that on interviews he gave on British TV when he was racing at Goodwood. In front of several world champions., including the incomparable John Surtees, he proclaimed himself the greatest racer ever known, a display of outstanding ego given the company and to be honest very little tact. Whether that was his "camera persona" or not I wouldn't know but I certainly wouldn't have rated him number one in the company he had at that point.

In terms of natural talent, I think Freddie is eclipsed quite roundly by Mike Hailwood. Freddie was but a brief bright spark when you put him upagainst the likes of Hailwood and Surtees...

There! That should stir things up a bit  :D

Hey LMP,

I have to say I based my comment on pure my own experience. I saw FS racing several times. Sadly only saw Mike once in '67 as a little boy and in '80 when he did 2 exhibition laps in Assen on the 250/6. Saw Sir John twice, once during the Centennial in Assen and on Spa. You could see the talent even on his high age. In my defence think that the opposition FS was up against might be slighty bigger. but all of them, by the way even the back markers from the day, deserve our deepest respect.
