Son thinking of getting VF1000

My Son looked at a 84 VF1000 yesterday and it seems to run great just needs
a bit of paint work. The dealer said that it pops out of 2nd when pushed hard.
Having never been in a tranny on a bike any ideas on that would be appreciated.
The bikes about 2 hours from the house and I haven't been down to ride it yet.

when it pops out of 2nd and your pushing it hard you know the rpm has to redline

Either it was consistantly run with the chain too tight, and / or the dogs are shot.   If you keep your foot pressure on the lever until you get to 3rd- you can nurse it along.  No speed, though.  It's just a way to get from 1st to 3rd.  Could be problematic in hilly country. 

The tranny has to come apart to fix it.

Ernie, would it be a tough to fix? I'm sure we could do it just won't him to know what's involved.
Having never looked at how a honda vf engine is put together and all. Thanks!

I never took a transmission apart.  I guess it's like anything else;  get a manual and document where everything came from and how it goes back.  Look for a site or 2 for that specific model- maybe there's a Yahoo Group or something?

Also- make sure the parts are available.

I would need to wonder what else is going on, though.  Either through neglect or abuse, I don't think a modern transmission should be doing this unless it's got a lot of miles on it.  I guess you looked at it real good- but don't ignore red flags just because it's pretty.  That's so old for a sportbike- could you even get your money back by parting it out?   OTOH, it IS kind of a classic... I just don't know much about sportbikes.  This is a pretty new bike to me.   
Now a '62 Velocette...

How much are they asking for it, also does it have the oil line mod people tended to put in VF's of that vintage?

Yeah probably worn dogs at the least or something worse possibly.

my brother has a couple of these and he loves them , they do have problems with cams wearing and cam chains and cranks can give trouble . nothing too difficult about the gearbox but when his bike had a crank noise he found it cheaper to buy a secondhand engine than buying a gasket set . he bought an R engine which has gear driven cams and it went in without to much alteration . this engine is supposed to be much stronger but only time will tell

Their asking $1200 and I don't think it's had the oil line mod. Seems to be just like it
rolled off the assembly line with no mods. He has also found an 01 CBR600FI with a few scuffs
but runs great for 2k. I think he should go with it.

G'Day RM, the early VF series bikes were all dogs, and over here where bikes are ridden 365 days of the year, you'd be hard pressed to find one still on the road. The VF1000R was a much better bike and it looked and handled really well, but like most of the bikes that Honda didn't get right, Honda would prefer to forget about them, so parts are scarce, at best.

If your only choices are a boat anchor of a VF1000, or a tatty CBR600, I'd still say buy the CBR, but 2K sounds a bit steep. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yeah, I wouldn't really want to bother with anything of the VF vintage that is older than '86.
You need those snazzy geared cams like I have on mine.  :)

thanks for the info! The cbr belongs to a friend and the upper faring is perfect he scraped the sides up a bit. Low speed drop.
New tires and everything else seems fine. I''' probably give it a spin tomorrow or the next day to check it out.

A quick Google search reveals that popping out of 2nd is common for the old V4 engines. I'd also be reluctant to buy one without knowing the condition of the cams.

well, he decided to get the 01 CBR 600 here local. We did find a 93 VFR in Raleigh that I think
would have probably suited him for a longer time but it was 3 + hours away and the 600 is fuel injected
and 5 minutes away.
