Pulling Stator

What is the best way to keep the crankshaft from turning while removing the stator bolt?  I put a long handled wrench on the points side, but it just picks up that side of the engine when I try to turn the stator bolt.  All suggestions and experience will be appreciated.

You can buy a clutch cage tool to make the clutch static while you turn the bolt. Of course, if the engine is still on the bike engage a high gear and you are good to go. IF the cylinders are out, put some pieces of wood over the crankshaft and put a thick piece of metal on the connecting rod, thus avoiding it to "sink" into the crankcase.

I was going to replace the camchain, so I just let the crankshaft swalow it until it got jammed and then I was able to remove the bolt.

do not put a wrench on the points side bolt, that will brake easily.

I used WD-40,a stap wrench, and the tranny in high gear and got it free

Does the rotor have to come off? Or can the cases be split with it on the end of the crank?

I assume there is no oil seal there that needs changing.

The rotor doesn't need to come off to split the cases and remove the crank, I think John just wants to take it off, he knows that the alternator is oil bathed and there's no crank seal on that side.

Just get a big screwdriver and poke it through the rotor, then pushing on that, and pulling on the wrench, you'll be able to undo the bolt, without harming anything. Then enjoy yourself getting the rotor off John, if the Honda special tool won't budge it (It had no effect on mine except to tear out the threads) a good 4 jaw puller is invaluable! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Well, thanks, everyone.  Terry I got out the GBMFSD (great big yada-yada screw driver) and did exactly as you suggested, and as I pushed down hard on my  3/8" drive big wrench, with the cheap 19mm socket, I heard that familiar click you get when a bolt comes loose.  Then the wrench fell off, and my wonderful 19mm cheap socket was no more.  This prompted a trip to Sears for a 1/2" drive 19MM 6-point socket, plus a 17MM 6-point for good measure, and as long as I was already there, a set of 6-point 3/8" drive sockets.  After this, a quick application of the GBMFSD and the 1/2" drive on a long break over handle quickly dispatched the bolt.  Now you guys tell me I don't need to remove the stator to split the cases, I think I'll just torque it back on.  Any way, do I need any special tools to split the cases?  I have already purchased the necessary amount of beer. (chuckle, chuckle)  ;D ;D

Dintcha read my reply to your email mate? Geez I slaved over that bloody keyboard to tell you that you don't need to remove the rotor? Oh well, you're not the only one to ignore me, boo hoo! :'(

Geez, yourself, Terry.  How are you?  I didn't get your email.  My hosting service put in a new anti-spam program, and suddenly I'm not receiving replies to a lot of emails.  I sure wish I had received it. :( :(

I've split my crankcases twice and both times tried to take the fly wheel thing off. Failed both times. Getting the bolt out is the easy bit unless you have the honda puller.

On email, my company uses antispam as well, and I don't half the work sent to me I used to  ;D ;D

Fair one John, probably my fault too, I've had a few emails returned, do you think I should change my email address from sonofspam@yahoo.com to something less threatening?

I only used that email address at the request of my neighbours black lab, and then he told me I'd f*cked up anyway? Damn dog won't shut up! Oh well, i'm off to clean my .44 and go for a drive..................  ;D

And so I'm on topic.  I split my case and left that great big hunk of copper on the end. ;D  Now to get the spares I need to put everything back together.
