I have the same problem with exhausts on 550 as Justin NJ
« on: April 25, 2005, 12:21:31 AM »
I have the same problem with my 550 exhaust pipes.  Pin holes (in all 4 pipes) and also just this week heard backfiring for first time.  I have priced "NEW" pipes - they run $237 EACH!

I have also looked for replacemen pipes at bike junkyards near Denver.

My question is - someone recommended "rechroming" the existing pipes.  Will this work on these pinholes?  Is that a possible fix?

Thanks in advance!
Linda

i've looked at what justin has... those are not pinholes!  that is surface rust gone bad...  the exhaust is deteriorating just like it would on any automobile...  yes these holes will affect performance... ooohhhh  my... 200 dollars or so?  sounds like any old exhaust to me...  ;)

Any exhaust looking like this on the outside is going to be 10 times worse inside. Spot welding the outside is not really an alternative. Time for a change....

My 550 passed MOT last week ;D. I can hear faint blowing type noise towards the rear of the exhaust  :( but no outward sign of holes etc. Can the exhaust start to deteriorate from the inside and am I likely to have to replace the whole 4 into 1 soon?

Linda - even with freight the NOS pipes from David Silver won't be that much!

Geoff - my 550K3 has no insides on both right hand silencers and passed the MOT easily last month. The tester said the sound of the exhaust is irrelevant as long as it is within the legal noise levels.

Chrome is applied to the surface of a metal.  A hole is not metal and it doesn't get coated/plugged.

There is supposed to be a drain hole at the low point of the pipes.  These plug, the pipes retain water and rust from inside under the chrome plating.  The steel under the chrome is lost.  And, replacement is the only option I'm aware of.

Cool ! I'll put up with it for as long as. It's only just noticeable at the mo.

Thanks Steve.

Linda, Dave Silver charges £79 for each pipe genuine honda plus about £8 for each connector gasket thingy at the rear. Thats all plus shipping and dont forget the Customs man WILL charge you an import tax. I know westernhillshonda has some stock at $200 plus each but the shipping will be cheaper and no tax so you have to do the sums yourself. Dont forget new exhaust gaskets at the head end. I hope to be in US next year but i suspect continental would whinge at 4 pipes as cabin baggage.

Sorry, guys, I've been off-line with Hurricane duty for the abandoned pets.  Who/what is Dave Silvers?  Is this a parts company in England?  (I'll google it in a minute.)  Anyway, I sure would like to get better pipes for  BB...so I'll go check it out.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks, I took a look see, but can't remember what exact model I have - 550-4 but my year says 1974 and theirs begin with 1975...strange?

I may e-mail them, I'll probably get to go to England this next year, and might just pick them up direct and I'm not too proud to carry them on the flight!  (hahaha-what a riot that would be-can you imagine the security screeners!)

Thanks again,

Linda

Linda ALL the 500/550 EXCEPT the 550K3 and 550F had the same exhausts. You will need the four pipes; the two connectors plus clamps; centre stand rubber stopper and four exhaust gaskets as you have originals at least you wont need the brackets.

Linda, Go to the web site and click on genuine spares NOT exhausts. Then go to the 500 Four K0/K1 and the exhausts and sealing gaskets are listed there. Exhausts are £79 each sealing gaskets £5.60 each (need 2) Clamp for sealing gasket £2.55 (need 2) and exhaust port gaskets £1.40 (need 4) Dont forget the centre stand rubber as they always break when you try and remove them. You are looking at about £340 or about $580 (at todays sell rate) plus shipping. If you email them, via the contact icon they will give you a total with shipping to US. Dont forget your customs and excise will want an import duty and if you come over here and buy over the counter you will be charged a tax of 17.5% called VAT. What you might be able to do is pay from the states and tell them you will collect. Depends where you are staying in UK next year as Leiston, where DS is located, is not the easiest place to get to. If you pm me i will sort out the part numbers you need to ask for.
