So here is a bit more detail.

Here is my frame, notice the white metal part of the frame, that is where I removed the triangular gusset deal to allow the tank to fit.

Here we see the OEM rubber bits, in place on the frame.

The starboard side ears not quite fitting into the tank mounts.

The port side ears not quite fitting into the tank mounts.

Now, dig this attachment shelf, ledge, thing... Notice how, as Srooks pointed out, the frame rails are clearly visible.

Here is another view, it seems to me that the rear of the tank needs to sit lower.

Of course, this seems to look an awful lot like the original.

It's really close, and if you have any ideas I'm all ears.

You say it's fiberglass, right?  Will it just pull down into place?  And could you make some longer rubbers for the front mounts?

Or as Carpy would say, 'Fit it like Don Juan in an Amsterdam brothel.'

(Man these Carpy-isms are fun!)   ;D

Hey Y'all,

So, I'm going to be posting this a few other places so if you read it twice I'll apologise in advance.

I talked with another board member who...

1. Lives in the same comunity as I do.
2. Has the same tank I do.
3. Was cool enough to let me compare the two.

Thanks again Tom, your bike is going to be great!

I could tell right away that the ears were not the same, the tank on the left is mine.

Here is a close up of mine...

Here is a close up of Tom's...

Now I shouldn't have to say this, again, but I have not altered the tank in any way. Likewise, Tom's tank is also unaltered.

As many of you have pointed out... I don't know how to mount this tank. This is, in fact, the first Dunstall tank that I have mounted to a CB750 (clearly I was gone that day in shop some 22 years ago)

The ass end of both tanks sits up high, I was wrong to think this was as big of an issue as I did. Here is Toms tank mounted.

I'm going to go ahead and send it back to Carpy. He is genuinely interested in customer satisfaction and I know we will get this worked out soon.

Later

I think Carpy hired a former Toyota engineer to handle quality controll, specifically for fiberglass:

I don't get it.  What do those mounts have to do with Carpy's tank?

I would just like to say I am totaly satisfied with my Carpy Dunstall tank.  It looks just like Flaherty500s on the bottom with the shorter mounts.  It fits just like the original and I have the option of placing the petcock on either side.  It came lined and the finish is nice and smooth.  It was worth the price to me and I hope this thread doesn't deter people from dealing with Carpy.  He was great to deal with before and after I bought it.  I had some questions about the petcock mounting and the next day he put pictures up on his site showing exactly how to mount the petcock as well as emailing me the same info.

There is a small group of Carpy detractors here and they use these threads to reinforce their dislike for him or his products/bikes.  They perpetrate their dislike to anyone that will listen and ultimately it hurts Carpy's business.  I remember when he first started posting on this board.  People were falling all over themselves telling him how great he was.  His business took off and now he doesn't post here very often.

The fact is that without people like Carpy, we wouldn't have access to some of the really neat items that have been reproduced in the last 10 years for these bikes.  Imagine if people didn't like Ken from CycleX's personality or Jay from Ape's personality and decided to hurt their business by bashing them at every turn.  What would happen to the products that we want for these bikes?  In my experience, and many of you have had the same, Carpy has always stood behind his products and offered great customer service.  When their is an issue with an item from any of the suppliers please try to work it out with the supplier first before posting.  If you don't get what you're looking for, then post away.

The mounts on my tank are what I had to make... the tunnel was too wide.
I got my tank when Carpy was working out of garage and posting to his own site.
When he went "big time" he changed, like greenday did when they got a label.

Hard to explain if you weren't there. Spikey knows what I mean.

Carpy's fiberglass stuff has been updated from when I bought it, but it's still a fiberglass part, made by hand.
so there's gonna be some flaws. I just accommodated with bracketry.

in the defense of the carpy bashers ...cuz i'm one of them

it's not that his products are sub-par ..
it's not that he talks to you like he's "the man" and your a peasant...
it's not that his parts that aren't sub-par are waaaay over priced ..
it's not that he has 3rd party parts that he claims are his own..also waaay over priced

......it's all of those things combined...

once upon a time , if you were an average joe, you could go to carpy ..who was also an average joe, and be treated as so ...

ok things change, now he's a very busy man , awesome. good for him ... but to jack those same "average joe's" that made him what he is ..and have #$%* for sale for 75 bucks and say "these are vintage style, very well made bla bla bla ..then i see the same thing in DennisKirk for 20  .  that's wall street/big business tactics  ..

he's clearly marketing a different crowd now a days ..

Now see, I think some of y'all are getting the wrong idea.

When I originally posted this thread I had some questions about fitting a tank to my bike. I wanted to see if anyone had any actual information about what this was supposed to look like, as I have never done this before. I never intended for this to be about beating up on Carpy.

He and I are working out a solution right now and as far as I'm concerned, Carpy has been great to deal with from the beginning.

I have Carpy's oil pressure gauge that mounts on the engine case.

I boogered up the oil galley plug by tapping the threads into it with a bolt, instead of a tap.

I asked Carpy if he had another one and could tap it for me, and how much it would cost.

Before I knew it, a drilled and tapped replacement galley plug arrived in the mail FOR FREE, wraped in a FREE CB750 engine t-shirt.

It's not like I have purchased a lot of stuff from the guy and he owes me or anything, either.

The dude definitely has a good side.
