Carpy's Dunstall Tank
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:45:39 AM »
As part of an On-going CB750 cafe project I recently purchased several items from Carpy's parts page, Including a Fiberglass, "Dunstall" gas tank.

I'd like to share some of the things that I have noticed so far.

While the tank looks to be well made I have had several issues with fitting and one issue with the petcock mounting holes being pre-drilled.

In order for this tank to work with my project I have had to remove the triangular gusset under where the tank is mounted, though I notice that on his web site he has not removed these when using this tank on his bikes.

In order for this tank to work with my project I will have to add material to the front supports as the ears on your tank are much wider than the stock tank, though I notice that on his web site these do not appear to be built up on the frames for his bikes.

The rear of the tank does not sit properly on my on-going projects frame. I was encouraged to remove material until the tank fits properly, and weld new material on as reinforcement. However, once again, I notice that on his web site the frames do not seem to be ground down in this area.

To quote his site "... you can simply push the tank on just like a stock one, this took some research to get right, but now it is a treat and easy to fit to any 750 HONDA."

I understand that this is a custom tank and may take a bit of massaging to fit properly, but for $600.00 I expected less fitting troubles.  have any of you experienced any of these issues while using this tank, would you mind sharing them with me?

I do not wish to remove any more metal from the frame and I think that cutting the tank would be foolish as well.

Do you think that this tank may have some defect?

I would really like to use this product, and continue to Document and Share my findings with it as it pertains to my on-going project, but this particular tank simply isn't going to work.

I sent Carpy an email but he has yet to reply, I'm sure he is a very busy man and I'm also sure he will be cool about it.

What do y'all think... am I wrong to think this should be less of a headache? I have posted this on another site too sorry if you have seen this already.

Thanks in advance

if you bought a tank that "you can simply push the tank on just like a stock one, this took some research to get right, but now it is a treat and easy to fit to any 750 HONDA" then you should get a tank that "you can simply push the tank on just like a stock one, this took some research to get right, but now it is a treat and easy to fit to any 750 HONDA."

simple as that.  carpy does sell some quality products and this one sounds to be defective.  i'd get him to give you a shipping label or give you a refund for the return shipping and he should send you a new one asap!  you'd think carpy would at least try and fit his tanks on to make sure they weren't defective before shipping to a customer...  he does a lot of his stuff through 3rd parties, so quality control is much more difficult...

I got a seat and I need to weld up a whole sub frame for it to sit on the stock hinge points and lock, the website sounded like the brackets for the stock seat would just bolt on and fit up perfect

if I got to do that much #$%* for a tank I'll just make my own.

CAll Carpy, write Carpy, email Carpy. As above if it was stated that it should fit then it should fit. That is WAY TOO MUCH money to have to modify it. It should fit and he most likely will solve the problem for you.

In fact send him a link to this thread so he knows his fans are watching.

Agreed.  This is his first post.  Internet protocol, is.... your first post should be an introduction....not just hitting us up for a quick answer.  We go to the trouble of building a site here...kind of a family for us....if he wants to be a part...great, but do it the right way.

Politeness still has a place.

That said, the tank should have been sent back to Carpy before you started modding it.  You modded it, now you are stuck with it...can't return items after you have modded them.....not to mention, custom made stuff NEVER,NEVER,NEVER fits like advertised.

it's why i ended up with an airtech seat, despite fiberglass thickness nowhere hear the stuff carpy does, none of his stuff will bolt to the hinges and latch

yup.  my airtech cowl seat had to be modded to fit too!  it was the one without hinges, because Lord knows what happened to those on my bike...  either way, i had to reinforce the seat section with a couple pieces of wood bracing across it so that i could screw it down.  granted i did this without and real direction or goal towards the final product, i was just excited to have the "new to me" bike and start cafeing it!  now i'm going to have to fix my excitement!

long story short, X100000000000 to what they said, custom "mass produced" stuff will never fit exactly right, unless you have a one off piece made just for you!

i didn't realize you HAD started messing with the tank, i must of mis-read your post.  but if you messed with it, it's yours for good.  and i agree with traveler.  i was just trying to put a little humor on the situation, but your first post should be an introduction so we can at least know what's going on in your head and where you're from!

The only thing he did wrong was post in the wrong section so get off your soap box. You could have just simply alerted a mod to have it moved and gave him a heads up instead of getting "we go to the trouble" bla bla I might not let you in my special club now BS. While he might not be documenting his every whim on this forum it appears he is buying products to get his bike to the status desired. In buying parts he is supporting this community and doing what I feel is the best any of us can do. While his initial post was no intro it was polite and fairly informative of his situation which is more then a lot posts by seasoned peeps on this forum.

BTW.. you mod it you bought it...No reason to #$%* to carpy at this point even though I still would..

I bought my Dunstall tank from Carpy and I was able to massage the support triangle to allow the tank to sit better on my K8.  The ears fit very well and it rests on the backbone perfecty.

As far as the petcock, you will probably need to buy one from K6 and earlier, as the K8 does not fit.  Yes its on the other side from stock.  it looks like your carbs are not stock so, this may be better for you.

Like I said, I bought my tank from Carpy, and although he is very busy, he stood by his product 100%.  There was a issue with the sealant and after a very professional exchange of emails, I had a new tank at my door.

I'm in the Denver metro area as well, so it you need anything or want to compare tanks just PM me.

Thanks for all the replies.

The tank is the same today as when I got it so returning shouldn't be an issue.

Like I said, I'm certain that Carpy will be cool about the situation. I sent him an email Wednesday and I want to give him some time to answer, I'll  keep y'all posted.

MilehighCB thanks for the offer, I'll PM you soon.

I ordered a tank and seat from him and has a similar situation. The tank didn't fit around the rubber bushings near the neck and the seat was for a stock tank, which would have been fine but i had him make the seat pad for it right away... which is now 4" too long after having to cut the seat down. I sent him an email and he basically insulted me and wanted me to send everything back to him so he could "sell it to someone who knows how to make it fit". I ended all conversations with him at that point and just forged ahead, lesson learned. So since then I've cut the seat down 4" to fit, fabricated an aluminum bracket for under the seat since i had to cut off the stock hinges and fender mounting cross member, and adjusted the cups on the tank to fit around the stock mounts. I'm still looking for a local upholstery shop to retool the seat pad he made. I really like his stuff and he does great work but the items he sells seemingly as "bolt on" replacements really aren't.

OK, here's my experience with Carpy's Dunstall Tank.  I had no problems fitting it and it sits exactly where I want it.
1. turn your front tank locator rubbers around and install them.  This will take up some of that space in the front.
2. Leave the stock rubber band that locates the rear of the stock tank on the frame.  This does 2 things, it cushions the tank and allows it to sit above the tank rails.  A fiberglass tank that is rubbing on metal frame rails will develop cracks/holes.
3. Carpy's Dunstall tank is an exact replica of the real Dunstall tank on the bottom.  The real Dunstall was meant to be installed over the stock rubber band.  You should not have to grind the frame for it to fit.

Anyway, he did start a build thread and an introduction.

I'm still nervous about these fiberglass tanks and pump gas....you guys have more guts than I do....It bothered me so much, I went to the expense of getting an alloy one.

Well if you told him you modded the tank trying to get it to fit then i a not surprised, i have now seen this tank fitted to a few bikes on this site and none had the problems you had. Not trying to be an arse but it looks like you didn't know how to fit it properly and have now damaged it. I don't think there is anything that Carpy can do.....Look at Srooks post above.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how anyone could assume that I have modified this tank.

I did have to modify my frame in order to accommodate the unaltered tank.

The tank is the same today as the day I got it.

In case I'm confusing anyone... I have not done anything to the tank!

In other news, I heard from Carpy today. It seems he was out of town for a bit. As I suspected and as I said several times he was great to deal with and he and I have discussed the next move. I am going to send him the tank (that I haven't changed in any way... see above) and he is going to test fit it onto an F frame. Carpy stands behind his products and I remain confident that things will work out very well indeed.
