Anyway I'll conceed that the factory made some HID's without projectors but I still think they are a  lot more effective with them.

I don't know of anyone putting an HID in the stock housing. Mine's aftermarket.

The headlight housing is the part that holds the sealed beam unless I am mistaken most people converting to HID are buying a H4 style reflector / lens and then just a H4 HID conversion kit.

i see, do you hav ea link to one of these relays?  and does anyone think the 55W is too much for an aftermarket housing going in the 750 bucket?  i do like the idea of being able to turn the lights on whenever, and i also like the ability to still have my high beam to flash...  but the 750 doesnt have any other extra switches, unless i threw one on somewhere...

i believe that 1974 and earlier 750's have the on/off switch for the headlight in the right side housing. my k4 does anyways.

I used a headlight housing from a 81 GL1100 (H4) and installed the HID kit...
and my 77k has a ON/ off for the headlight!
CB750k77 rebuilt (almost)

look on ebay for a GL1100 headlight or you can buy aftermarket ones...

but i wanted it to look like a stock "stanley" headlight

I got one of these kits too.  My problem is, the wires are short where they should be long!  There's nowhere to put the junction box (I assume that's all it is) and the ballast AND the transformer and still get everything to the headlight that needs to get there.  Not only that, but no instructions and an extra set of wires (I assume that's for a second headlight) to deal with.

I'm also concerned about whether I need a relay and switch or not.

It's going to be a long night.  Maybe I'll call them in the morning.

That junction box is a relay. The wiring diagram that comes with it should explain pretty much all you need to know.

Sadly, no wiring diagram was included with my 35w Hi/Lo H4 kit.  I did download a PDF of the installation instructions for a Toyota 4runner. Aside form that, it was all pretty self explanatory except for the little wires that control the Hi/Lo function.  I had to run the second set of wires to the bulb (the ones I presumed were for the second headlight) in order make use of the little Hi/Lo connector, which won't reach the bulb unless it's right next to the ballast.

Since I'm using a projector lens I removed the metal end cap from the bulb, and the difference in the Hi beam seems pretty negligible. It is definitely brighter than the 50/40w stock bulb though!

I'll finalize it tomorrow and try to post pics of what I did to fit everything (if anybody is interested).

I know this is more of a discussion on the whole process but I'll throw in support of DDM.  I visit there regularly for lights for friends, sometimes out of stock but never any issues.  Have them on several vehicles.  These guys import 40,000 kits at a time, they move volume.  No help on the phone, know your part needed and order online.

what do you have to look for it a replacement 7" housing to fit it to the stock 750 bucket?  or are all 7" lights the same?

Not bad good price too for solid glass.  You'd still need the regular HID kit that only comes with the normal h4 bulb

Cheapo and adaptors would work just the glass are gonna be higher quality (usually) and more duarable.  (plastic fades / fogs over time, heat stress cracks ect)

As far as heat goes, The HID bulb will burn cooler than a halogen bulb. When I worked at an MB/Audi/Porsche/AstonMartin dealer, the warranty parts guy took two old audi units for his Isuzu SUV.
He took temps in the reflector housing to compare. The halogen raised the temp to 250F, while the HID only raised it to 180F.

yes the HIDs will burn colder per W

so what do you need to know when ordering a replacement 7" light?
will any fit or does it need to be a certin one to work with the OEM bucket?

In my experience, no, nothing special, a 7 incher is a 7 incher.

It's kind of confusing - there are folks talking about the inner ring here and there and buying a whole other enclosure to fit.

That's what I'd like some clarification on - short on funds and time so I'd like to get it right the first time. I'll go back and look. Might be all 7" lights will fit but some are deeper than the stock bucket or somesuch.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for a projector lense or one that has the solenoid to fake hi/lo. Might make sense on why folks go the H4 route as well.

Does anyone just know?

I meant heat stress cracking from the sun more than anything.  Fogging with age can be fixed pretty easy on the plastics but the heat stress cracks... yea they don't go away.
