i do remember the plastic having the tint, just don't remember it being mostly transparent!  thanks for the clear up, i think this is the direction i'm going to go.  the only problem with the CCRT, is that you need a small transformer, which is valuable real estate.  so starts the search for 80mm LED rings!  :D

By file, you just mean the JPEG, right? Sorry, I'm a metal guy...software scares me :'(
Actually I still haven't figured out how to do the little blue box quotes... Oh well. Reason I'm asking is the speedo on the Bikes and Babes thread actually is pretty cool, I could do that. Anyone want to photo shop a red-head for the tach for me?

Oh yeah, slick as hell IC.

when you search them buy 2-3 sets (4 halos) and search 'LED ring' in :eBay Motors>Parts and Accessories" and "electronics>Car Electronics"

I say buy a few sets cause they're like 5-10 bucks a pair with free shipping, and extras could help your friends.

i bought a set of these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260570762624

but i didn't find the ones you had.  i searched halo instead of ring.  but for $10, that's not a bad deal at all!!  should of bought 2 sets of these for the price of 1 set of mine.  oh well, $21 still isn't a bad deal for this upgrade!  live and learn...

that's the same part and the same company I got mine from. I just couldn't find it when I made the first post.

when you get them, check the solder joints and make sure they're not too thin.

you coulda just clicked the link I posted and bought those :P

EDIT: oh I see, you bought yours before I posted the link.

when I search I use ""80mm LED"" for my parameters

You have the front covered, but what about the brake lights
anything out there for the opposite end

OK!!
so I delved inside my speedometer to see what was going on with the "burned out" LEDs.

see what color the plastic is? If it wasn't sanded off, you could see through it like glass

see how much space there is?

BRIGHT!! you can see the burned out ones at the bottom

The ring is powered by 12v that goes into eight 129 ohm resistors (dropping 12v to 9v) each resistor powers three 3v LEDs.
I removed and tested the resistor, (@129.5ohm) which was fine.
testing the bad LEDs showed 16-24ohms of resistance meaning the diode fused together (I don't have a scope so I don't know exactly what happened in there)

I also tested the traces for resistance, opens, and shorts and they were fine.
I'm guessing it was a vendor issue with that particular reel of LEDs
___________________________________________________________________

next step is to disassemble these and use their LEDs to fix my gauges.
($5.34 a pair with free S/H -eBay)
the other one I want to use as a running light inside my headlight.

gratuitous pics of spare surface mount electronics-

piles of teeny parts!!

I forgot, I stripped and soldered the LED wiring to the original lighting wires, then stuck them to the inside of the gauge with silicone to keep them separated and still.

also, here's a pic of the backside of the reflector
    I guess it's not white, it's sort of a green/white

Hey, you can order those LEDs from Digi-Key. They're PLCC-4 white LEDs. Osram TOPLEDs are probably the ones you want. And hey, you happen to know the values of those random SMT caps?  ::)

I'm sure I could have, but then I wouldn't have that extra LED ring to put inside my headlight assembly as a running light.

sure thing.
custom dynamics sells them for around 60 bucks.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/15-LED-Integrated-Light-Bar_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2558642042QQitemZ160396746818QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

they're expensive but worth it, they have a good warranty and are they're in America.
to bend them you peel off all the 3M adhesive, sit em in hot water, bend them to the right shape, and let them cool that way.   I used "seal all" glue to mount em, it has methyl ethyl ketone in it, which melts plastic and bonds your tail light to whatever you stick it to.

Little bit of irony there, using an LED light strip to illuminate a license plate proclaiming your bike to be an ANTIQUE!!  :D

Your build continues to impress, IC!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I can see a couple .0047uF in there.

Pretty cool you have a bowl full of surface mount caps.

what would he need power inverters for on an LED application?

no inverters, leds just use resistors soldered on the board.

Ahh I was wondering why led's would need those.  That one link posted took me to a site that had the cold cathod neon rings I think (which require the inverters).  I do have one more question how is the power consumption on those?  I know are bikes arn't the best on output and I am already running dyna ignition and the green coils..  I was considering the capsule halogen conversion to the headlight too and I am thinking I might be getting kinda close to max output....  Then again I guess if I just go really fast everywhere (is there another way?) and keep the RPMs up it won't matter right lol!

Read up in the post the gauge face is actually a semi see through green blue plastic, all you do is sand off the old numbers and use a new vinyl one and walla the light will come through the plastic as that kinda blue green light...  Man those look bad ass I am gonna have to do this now.  Damn you industrial as if I didn't have enough side projects with this bike lol!
