Thats were I got the led info, thanks Industrial for the great idea.

I did mine yesterday but I used a flexible led strip in red and put it lower in the gauge housing to illuminate a bit more than the numbers since mine are white with black numbers.

that looks really good! i think I might redo mine with those strips.
I"d also like to make a way for them to be easily replaced.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Thanks man.  That is the difficult part (replacing).  Led's should last longer but nothing is forever.  The bendable strips look to be pretty solid and completely enclosed in soft/rubbery plastic for protection.  Only time will tell.

Are the gauges on a '71 500 the same size as the 750 or 550? And it sounds like the 90mm halo's are the ones to use to clear the odo reset? I see alot of angel eyes on ebay for $9 a pair.

they're different sizes. you gotta measure your gauge and go from there.

Well I finally opened up my speedo gauge and measured the face and it is 75mm. It is also made out of metal not of tinted glass. It is a 72 cb500 and the gauges seem small compared to that of my 550. I like the smaller gauges but I cannot find a 75mm LED ring. I think I may just use the led light rope and form it around the underside of the face and see how well it lights up. I will have to adhere the vinyl overlay directly over the top of the metal face unless someone knows of an alternative gauge face that will fit that is made from the glass??? I would like the light to shine through the overlay and not just around the outside edge.

Just done my gauges over last few days after seeing this thread a few weeks ago, Thanks IC for the motivation

For anyone whose thinking of using the LED strips I used them and they turned out very well. I also used red flourescent paint on the needle and the ring around the inside of the gauge and it really makes them stand out in the dark. I just siliconed the strips in place at the bottom and the 24 LED strip was prety much the exact size. Had to solder on heavier wires though as the ones that came on them were patethic. These are on a 400f by the way.

Great post guys.... I am no electrician and i have very little experience with electricity but i am confused with how to wire these... Do i have to cut the wires that come on them and replace with better wires or can i just use the stock wires... also my stock gauges have 2 bulbs how do i wire these?  I saw the first post but the gob of silicone kinda hide what was done...

If you guys could help me out that would be awesome!

Thanks

I just did mine and I had a couple of extra light harnesses. I found the crappiest ones and cut the rubber boot off of one side. The other side I left alone. I ran the new wires through on of the holes for the lights and then used the boots to seal up the light holes. Now wire the new light to the cut you made earlier. There is probably a better way but I figured this would work for me, and it does. ;D

Hey..
the wiring is kind of up to you.
I wanted it to be totally reversible, so I took two of those little light bulbs and broke the glass out of them.
Then I wired the wires that came with the Halos into the light bulb housing... making a direct-replacement. My halos didn't have TOO thin of wires though. If I wanted to change them, the solder points were quite exposed.

regarding the other socket? Just take the bulb out.

Awesome idea... did you just solder each wire to one of the two wires in the light bulb?  That seems like a great idea...

I couldn't get the solder to stick to the outside (or the ground, I suppose) of the housing. Which is why I went the route I did. That and I had extra harnesses.

Not the wires.. but the solder points in the bulb base.

It is a tiny little job, but that is what I do :)

Just FYI, you can buy those bases new with fresh wires coming out of them.  I dont remember where I've seen them, but I know you can get new ones to avoid 35 year old solder points.  Good idea nonetheless!!

So.. I forget which product number it is exactly... so you would have to do some measuring.. but I think this would totally do the trick:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2FG4BP-G4-adapters.htm

They also have empty bases on that site...
