rear brake switch question
« on: January 19, 2006, 01:56:31 PM »
I was just wondering if the rod on the rear brake switch, that is attached to the spring, supposed to move in and out? It's for a '74 CB 750. As of right now it doesn't really move in and out.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, it should, this actuates the brake light. When you say it does not move, is that using the brake pedal? Can you move it at all by hand?

no, I can't move it by hand. I guess it's all clogged up. You think it's possible to fix it?

Not sure, perhaps someone else can answer. Might be corroded inside or something. Might be worth considering a replacement (if avail.) considering its a safety issue.

$4 over at Parts N More.  It's about halfway down the page.  I replaced mine about a year & a half ago with theirs & it's worked great ever since.  I think there's a $35 minimum order, but I'm sure there's something else that you might want & the shipping is free to the US.

Good luck,

Cycle-Re-Cycle has them as well, and no minimum order.

thanks unruly. I got the switch to move up and down, but now have discovered that both my front and rear brakes do not actuate the taillight. Would the motor have to be on to make them work? This bike has been a winter project, and it's finally gonna be ready for this weekend, so I haven't really noticed that they don't work til now. I have checked the connections at both switches and also the fuses, but I'm stuck, and don't have a manual handy. Any ideas where else I should start looking?
Thanks again.

Two different switches actuate the brake light (front vs. rear). Though I guess both switches could be bad, I would check to see if the brake light bulb is good first.

Forgot to add, no, motor does not need to be running. Just need the ignition turned on. One other possibility is dirty/corroded connections elsewhere in the harness. They may need cleaning if the bulb turns out to be OK or a replacement bulb still does not work.

This is a less than $10 part. The spring and slider in mine were a bid jerky and rusted, shorted somehow and blew the main fuse. It's a quick fix for peace of mind.
