Last nubish ? for the Day Promise!
« on: March 19, 2010, 07:46:14 AM »
The bike i am working on had both front and rear air suspension.  The front fork caps have a little air vent.  Can i just switch the caps out for regular ones and fill the forks up with oil, or are the internals completely different?

Picture of the caps:

Sorry, 78 750K.   http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=64649.0

The rest of the fork looks stock to me from the outside, if that helps.

Your forks are oil-filled, the 5 or 10 lbs. of air they get is 'extra' and supposed to help damping.... why not replace the valves and then you can run them air or not .
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Thanks Spanner.  The way they were bottoming out (couldn't even get the kickstand down) i figured they must not use any oil in them at all.  Also, the compressor, which was super heavy, and air lines have all been removed to simplify things.

To make sure i have this straight, the valves are the brass bits in the middle and they can be removed/replaced?  Are they supposed to be one way valves?  As they stand now, they breath when i pull up and on the handle bars.

I dealt with those last week. I took my caps to the hardware store and after long searching I found some black allen head screws that were very short. wrapped them in plumbers tape and sealed them up. You can always go back to the airforks later if you want to.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

The shocks absolutely need the normal amount of oil, this gives the damping action... without it the front forks are just on springs and will "pogo" mercilessly. The air pressure adds spring action and the system you had with a compressor and tubes to the forks allowed adjustment of the spring force to compensate for load, and was fairly popular when a large heavy Windjammer type fairing was used. There's no valving in the fork caps, they connect directly to the compressor tubes. You must plug these holes or install a valve like those on tire tubes - that will let you add a bit of pressure if you want. The stock forks are actually air-assisted since the air trapped under the caps will be compressed when the front end drops. If you don't plug the holes this normal airspring action is lost.
