Bent something
« on: August 05, 2010, 05:42:32 PM »
I layed the bike down pretty hard going 20 - 30 mph.

Now the handlebars & top clamp are pointing in one direction, the forks and tire in the other.

What could be wrong? How do I fix this?

relax the clamp bolts at the top & bottom of the triple clamps, if it springs back to nearly straight, twist it back straight.

then re-tighten the clamp bolts.

Then check the forks and handle bars for bends, or other damage.

If you cannot verify there is no further damage take it to a competent shop and have them check it.

Sounds like you have no front guard?...Do as Marl said and if you don't have a front guard , install one as it helps the front end stay where it should be and makes it safer.

If You can't fix it with a hammer, You've got an electrical problem.

I straddled the wheel (and fender, I have a fender it's semi-intact) between the knees, braced the bottom of the tire with my feet and yanked on the handlebars.

Something popped back into place and it seems to be pretty solid.

I'm going to have to tear it down over winter and re-do it from the ground up.

How does one unbend bent handlebars? In Chicago?

EDIT: I hope I don't kill myself on the ride back ...

Not a permanent fix but good enough to get you home. Stick a piece of long {3-4foot} pipe over the bars while that are still clamped in place and bend until ridable, you'll have to take the throttle and switch off first.
