Pistons, cylinders, or big bore?
« on: January 24, 2006, 06:32:05 PM »
Pulled my top end off my K1, and the rings were rusted to the sleeves pretty bad. I had a friend hone the cylinders to see if they could be saved, with just an oversize ring kit. No luck. The rust goes too deep.

So now I have to decide which way to go.

1-Keep my pistons and get new rings and cylinders.
2-New pistons and rings, and have the cylinders bored.
3-Just get the big bore kit.

I'm trying to go as cheap as possible. My head wants the big bore kit, but my wallet doesn't. I'd like to keep my current cylinders, since they are chromed, like every other part of the engine (it spent some time in a chopper).

So, which is the cheapest route?

Current-

Past-

'76 CB750 Cafe Racer-Sold
'78 CB400T Crash Victim-Traded for a tattoo

836 kit! There's one on ebay right now for $380.  Then he'll bore your block for $159.  Now your wallet is outvoted 2 to 1!
My dog loves me for the person I try to be.  Either that or he's hungry.

If the rust goes as deep as you say, you will need to bore and get larger pistons anyways. Re-ringing something that you had to bore usually does not hold up long depending on how large you have to go.

So what you need to do is get the cost for oversized pistons and rings and compare it to the cost of going big bore.

You will most likely go big bore.
