Steel Toe. Lowriders Sears. Tallboys Timberland. They were on sale and black. Alabama roads are just used for oil deposits, so the matching white Go-GO boots...

I usually wear my trusty Sketchers when I go ride.
Not a big fan of "boots". I know the advantages of wearing them, just not a fan...

AGREED!  I've worn my over the ankle version since 1998 everytime i go riding and more often than not, in between.  they look the Doc. Martens part but have more sole... or is that soul... nope, more sole!  (that was supposed to be punny, i wasn't searching for the correct spelling  :P )I think i remember posting about this in the original poll too.

I never recommend steel toed boots. When I started working steel (lo these many years ago), my boss told me that if a beam lands on your foot, the metal in the boot will curl in and just make it harder to get your boot off (and your toes, too, if you get me). That was all I needed to hear...

that's why (these days) metatarsal gaurds are also required when working in steel mills or supply companies.  I worked at a supply company about 10 years ago and redwings were the usual.  not sure if the extra gaurds (they cover the upper part of the foot) help the steel toe from curling... but, i'd imagine so having worn them and tested their strenth on many occasions.  I never dropped anything on them but, i've set the end of a 1ton beam on them just for kicks (i guess i wasn't really kickin at that point tho  :D )... they supported it.  now, can you set that much on the metatarsal gaurd you ask... nope, they are usually plastic or a thin steel with cushion above the foot allowing for walking motion... go to the redwing website to see what i mean.

except, riding w/ these boots is nearly impossible because the gaurd is so in the way.

and, check the boots thread about cutting your toesies off your footsies while riding with steeltoes.

so, i'd recommend just a good pair of boots with out all the fancy steel that might be a catch22 when on a bike.

I thought the MythBusters tried that recently and no matter how much force they put on the toe cap, they couldn't get it to curl or cut toes off. It was cool to watch. (I wonder if I could get a job building the cool stuff they use on that show...?)

surely if it's enough force to curl the steel down around the knuckle end of your toesies (um, ouch) it would be enough force to pretty much put an end to your strollin' with or without the steel toes...

at least with the steel guillotine effect it would make the cleanup simpler...

Well, I was told that that was the problem- it makes "clean up" more difficult.  Anyway, I've never wished I had steel toes and I'm guessing it might make shifting less comfortable (?).

I do know that when I got center-punched, that RW boot is the only reason I have a foot today. Sometimes it hurts, but it's there!  ;)

far be it from me to critique the opinion of a steel jockey when it comes to hard-core footsie protection...

i worked a summer cutting cat heads off of concrete forms on a parking garage - the steel guys were definitely the bad-asses of the crew...i myself preferred the concrete pour  ;)

Well I was off work today sick with a cold, which is f*cking ridiculous considering that it hasn't dropped below 70 deg F and was 110 on Sunday, anyway, that Pingel petcock I ordered from Z1 Enterprises for my Suzy GS1000S arrived in the mail (albeit with the wrong mounting base) so I dragged myself out to the 'shop and machined up a new base, screwed it all together, and took it for a run.

Now being as safety concious as I am after riding for 37 years, I actually removed my work-shorts, and wore jeans with my T shirt and steel capped elastic sided work boots, summer gloves and open face helmet. Of course, all this additional clothing necessitated stopping at a "pub" and quaffing a litre of cider before continuing on my adventure. I re-discovered a magnificent road I lost "Brigadoon" style a couple of years ago, which consists of 60 degree slopes, and corners remeniscent of the Swiss Alpine roads that made me so carsick when I was a kid, so I did my best to scrape my elbows on the white line as I took those bends at maximum warp.

In hindsight, a leather jacket and proper boots might have been more appropriate, I've got lots of different bike boots, I like the look of my old "Johnny Reb" Harley boots I bought 20 years ago when I had my Sporty, and I bought a nice pair of Red Wings on Ebay back in 1999, but the trouble with all "pull on" type boots, is that whatever you can pull on, the road can pull off. The best pair that I have is actually an old pair of "Rossi" scramble boots (pre "Moto Cross" days) that you stick your foot in, then wrap the boot's shin guard around your leg, then strap up with about 6 straps and heavy duty buckles. They look a bit dated now, but are the strongest boots I've got, I bought them when I was 15 years old, and we've had some amazing adventures together, but today I was too lazy, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Doesn't your breath freeze like a cartoon "speech bubble" at that icy temp mate? Geez, I can imagine a whole heap of bike riders riding down a frozen freeway on a miserable, overcast day, dropping their frozen breath bubbles onto the icy blacktop, where it smashes like light bulbs, in tiny frozen shards, tinkle, tinkle, tinkle........................ (ooh is it time for my meds already? "Coming dear!") ;D
