Topic: carb swap

Hey guys, have a question for you. I have a 78f and have a few float bowl screw holes stripped. I cannot find any helicoil/timeserts that small around me for some reason. I tried the stripped thread repair kit by permatex and that didnt work so it may be time for some new carbs. Is there any carbs off some other bikes that are an easy swap? These keihin pd42a carbs are hard to come by so I was thinking maybe some carbs off a dohc honda might work? Would I be able to use my stock carb boots? any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

you'll probably have to get new carb boots from the carbs that you're going to swap on there.  you could probably put the 76k carbs on there, those are m ore plentiful and easy to rebuild.  there's a few sets of PD carbs floating around on here for sale, but they might be spoken for.  you can buy new insulators for the 76 carbs from Honda still...

all the sets of pd carbs i found end up being sold or people dont get back to me unfortunately. Im going to try a slightly larger tap i have here. *fingers crossed*

just be careful.  the metal Honda used wasn't the best quality, so go slow and use lube if necessary.  thats what she said

Yea, i can attest to the terrible metal with me having 8 or 9 stripped holes. I went to lowes and picked up an 8-32 tap and a couple screws and came home. tapped the holes and screwed in the screws and she looks good. the real test comes tomorrow when I put them back on and turn that petcock. wish me luck!!

Thanks for this thread! I just found the source of my #3 carb leak on my 550, a pair of stripped screws and a broken bowl ring. Crap! Ordered the rings yesterday, I'll trot me out to the hardware store on Monday to get some 8-32 screws (already have the tap).

Always glad to help a fellow Nick. if one of the blind holes are stripped you may need to use a few washers to shim the screw
