Clutch Operated Switch
« on: May 12, 2005, 01:19:26 PM »
According to the wiring diagram, I have a Clutch Operated Switch on my 74 CB550. It is supposed to fit into the clutch lever housing on the handlebars, but it's not attached. It's just hanging out, not connected to anything at all.

What is this switch for? What functionality is missing if it's not attached? The bike starts and runs and I can go through the gears without it.

Thanks,
Brian

In the litigation-mad US, the clutch switch did not allow the engine to be started unless the clutch was pulled in - just in case it was in gear and hurt the poor little rider...

Goes with the "Wear a helmet" and "Do not touch hot engine" stickers.

Hmmm... That's what I was thinking, but mine still starts with the clutch out (electric start). I think the two wires on the loose end are touching, allowing it to start anyway. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

What do you mean "litigation-mad US!?" I'm going to sue you for that!  ;D

If its in neutral it will start with clutch out.  Try it in gear.

The issue is your bike will not (or should not) start while IN GEAR unless the clutch is disengaged.  This is to prevent you from pushing the start button while in 1st gear, launching your bike into a crowd of pre-schoolers, nuns, baby seals, whales, the ozone layer or who/whatever we're saving today  ::)

It is a ROYAL PITA (pain in the backside) when your bike isn't running exactly perfectly, and tends to stall when warm at idle.  Without a functioning (key word - these switches do fail) switch, you can't push the start button while rolling in gear with the clutch pulled in.  You have to put the bike into neutral before starting.

Anyhow - check your wiring diagram, and hook the switch up.  Test it first though to make sure it functions.  If it doesn't, replace it - they're cheap ($10 or so new from Honda - I just picked mine up 2 hours ago  ;D)

Aha, never tried starting it while it was in gear. It all makes sense now.

It looks like it's cut at the point where it connects to the clutch housing. I may be able to take it apart, strip a couple centimeters of wire and hook it up.

Thanks for the information!
