3 ohm or 5 ohm coils?
« on: March 29, 2010, 07:37:47 PM »
I am switching to a Dyna S ignition with new wires and plugs on my '71 CB750 cafe conversion.  (I am installing a new MAIN wiring harness as well)
With price being the same, will I get better performance from the 3 ohm coils?
It took 10 years but she's finally done!

The 5 ohm coils will draw a little over half the current that the 3 ohm units will.  Given the charging systems on these bikes isn't quite 'robust' I'd lean towards the 5 ohm setup unless you're running crazy compression.  Once you've got enough 'umph' to light the candle, more just wears the plug out quicker.

If it makes a difference, I have an 836 kit and mild cam as well.

Mine is an AGM from Scorpion - $60 incl shipping. Someone here on the forum had recommended them and it's been great for me.
