Old CL77 305 Scrambler - 1965 Completed August 29, 2010
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:46:20 PM »
Well, I said I wasn't going to do anymore........I was tired, I had no room......

Here we go again - a friend called me and said he knew of a "barn find". I did not listen to my better reasoning and now I have something to keep me busy at nights for the next year or so. This will go nicely with my 1966 S90, 1967 Black Bomber, and my 1968 CL175 Scrambler.

I'll keep you posted on the restoration.

Gordon

Finished it today with the setting of the timing and putting fuel in the tank. It started on the 2nd kick and was idleing on it's own without choke after 30 seconds. This is probably the easiest starting bike I own or have owned - the GT750 Suzuki the only close competitor. I chose to go with NOS cables and their discoloration and all as opposed to new re-makes. The throttle cable is a new replacement because I have not yet found a new 45 year old original. Still looking... I also need to work on getting that 40+ mold release wax off of the tires. I just hate getting things wet.

What's a god price for one of these?  Locally there is one just like that for sale for $900.  Looks complete and in decent shape has not been running in several years.

That looks a lot like my CL350 I picked up in Nov. That is before the torrential rain storm we hit on the way home. Cleaned it up pretty well for me.   ;D

Nice find! Can't wait to see what it looks like without the mudcake on it.  :D
1969 CL350 Scrambler... almost done!!! Well, until something else goes wrong. :)

Fact is, I picked up on a '63 CL72 (250) a few years ago and just never seemed to get to it,it was in a little worse looking shape than yours ,but was mostly complete except for the levers and the tank emblems. Then my buddy, Eddie worked up a trade and took the bike apart to attempt a restore on it. The pistons were GROWN to the cylinders and he ended up breaking the lip on the top of both cylinder liners. After a bit, he got another deal on some Bridgestones and told me that if I wanted it (the CL72) back, I could just get it and not be concerned about the trade we had done, which was fine with me. Now, he is showing interest in it again. So, this one is kind of in limbo. In the mean time, I came up with a deal on a CL77 engine that was complete except for the right sidecover of the engine. This engine turns over good and has compression. I originally got it to change out the cam for the CB cam (for the tach drive) and use it in my CB77 build. But now, I'm torn on what to do with it. I also have a basic amount of a '67 CL77 roller that I could build a 67' CL77, but anyway, I'm watching YOUR build with extreme interest! ;)

Guys, I don't have any books yet since this just all came together yesterday/today. I did pick it up and brought it home this evening.

Were all of these silver, or were some gold? I really like the gold but never thought to ask the original owner. I'll call him tomorrow at a decent hour.

Thanks,
Gordon

Hey Gordon, have you been here?  http://www.honda305.com/ Lots of good info AND there's a forum as well. It's not as active as here, but there is a lot of info there.
In fact, there is a member here, who (like me and Hahnda) is a member there as well, Jensen is who I'm talking about.

Not sure about the gold ones. Most were either black frame with silver tank and side covers or red frame with silver tank and side covers.

Here's a link to the forum and you will see that there is a section just for CLs.

There are a pair of excellent books by Bill Silvers (they are offered on the 305.com forums) and are greatly detailed. They indicate that the
colors were Black, Red (Scarlet actually), Metallic Silver, Dark Silver and Royal Blue. The 2 books I am referring to, would be an excellent purchase. They are FULL of valuable info. 8)

I don't see scrambler exhaust, tank pads and badges, sidecover(s) but it looks like everything else is present and waiting for some magic!!! Keep us up to date Gordon (I know how you do em' up right!!). I had a 66 or 67 when I was a kid (can't remember) but mine was stripped for dirt only.

Thanks guys. I like the Red and Black frames for sure, but that Blue and Yellow - never!

I got to meet Bill Silver in October at our Barbers Vintage Festival VJMC event. We had lunch and dinner together. Very nice individual too. I'll get over there and snoop around later today.

The exhaust with slotted covers, both side covers, are included - they will have to go to Browns for plating though.....

Just a couple of months ago, I picked up on a CL77 engine that is complete except for the right side cover and carbs, but the engine turns over well and is said to have good compression. I originally bought it to use in a Super Hawk Cafe (after changing out the cam shaft so I could have the tachometer drive), but I also have part of a '67 CL77 and just might have to put together a 305 Scrambler built the way Honda should have offered a model back then (without lights and in the TRUE sense of what a scrambler is all about). ;)

Here's a shot of my CL77 from outside the fence, in my back yard

Thanks for all of the compliments guys.

Bill, I did check out the website, registered, and ordered both of Bill Silver's books along with the factory shop and parts manuals. Thanks for the tips/advice. I did learn that every CL77 had silver fenders, tank, and side covers - not one ever came in gold. The frame for this and the fork lowers were black originally, so they'll go back that way. What is interesting is that it appears to be a very early model and may actually be a 1965. I spoke with Nick of Ohio Cycle (helped me with tons of NOS Bomber parts) and he said the early ones would actually be the most rare. I'm kind of happy about the whole thing - $300 and local pick-up so I'm not much into it.

Thanks to all again for the input.

Before you get too far down the trail for sourcing any parts, be sure you have the frame and motor IDs.  If yours is a '65 its known as the small brake 305. The big-brake models have the same hubs as the Black Bomber.  I have restored four CL77s and one CL72.  I have another CL77 on my bench but have been doing other things for the past year. It time to get back to it as I plan to show it off at the Road America Vintage Motorcycle Classic in June.

Yes, Bill Silver and many others are available to help you with the build. I have torn down 18 scramblers and still have a few to put back together, including 3 or 4 of the earlier 250 models that have the aluminum fenders. The price was right for what you have to start. I have paid more for similar or less.  Here is a little inspiration.......

The dirty stuff..... I've had a few evenings with the beadblaster in-hand and am slowly taking off her dust, dirt, and 45 years of aging. The fun part is just around the corner - assembling the powdercoated, chromed, and polished pieces. I'll start getting back pieces in Honda Red powdercoat late next week.
