Put the bike in 1st gear.  Put a socket and ratchet on the nut and hit the ratchet with a rubber mallet.  That should break it loose.  You may be able to break it loose without the rubber mallet but you might bust your knuckles.

My K1 sprocket is held on with a small plate, bolted to the sprocket: remove the 2 bolts and rotate the plate until the teeth line up with the splines and pull it off, then the sprocket should slide right off. (I looked at a K7, and it has a single bolt in the center off the sprocket; I don't know when they made the change)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

hmm... ya mine has the plate but it also has the center bolt with the oil screw in the middle of it. i got the two bolts out but the middle nut is stuck in place. i will have to look at it tomarrow some more. need to get the stupid thing off.. wants to turn the engine over.. but ill try spining the plate see if that works.

The K1, if in original condition, has the big nut held by the locking tab washer. it does not hold the sprocket on, but it interferes with getting it off.

The big nut has the chainoiler adjuster in its center. SRook has the best idea. I think using a higher gear, might as well go for fifth, will decrease the leverage on the engine allowing it to provide more resistance.
Are the spark plugs still in the engine? They should be for this purpose.
I guess 73Nancy that you realize now its best to get that nut off or at least loose before removing the chain.   ;D

The locking tabs on my bike are missing!(blame the PO?) Also, the corners of the nut line up with the male splines, so I have always been able to slide the plate/sprocket right off. I did notice some rounding of the nut, so I'm guessing the PO gave up on loosening the nut, and broke the tabs off to change the sprocket. Obviously, the tabs aren't necessary, since there has been no problem with the nut coming loose....

Is there a reason not to use air?

Its not a straight shot, a bulge in the crankcase is in the way. Could use a universal joint, but its clumsy.
