an interesting ride report...
« on: March 23, 2010, 03:16:05 PM »
This Sunday, a local club the Flying Fifteen put on their spring opener. The weather was absolutely beautiful all week, but in proper tradition it turned nasty sunday morning. I was there on my Norton Commando, which I only recently got on the road. I put a hundred miles or so on it Saturday, but on Sunday the bike was still in shakedown mode.

It ran and rode great, until somewhere between St. Helens and Vernonia on Caanan Rd. (for any of you locals), when it suddenly became a 350 single. For you non-locals, this stretch of road is all forest and clear-cuts, and is in the middle of nowhere. Fun windy road. At this point of course, the rain was coming down so hard it felt like hail. I just held the throttle and prayed that Vernonia was closer than I knew it was. At one point, I reached down and jiggled some stuff around, and the left cylinder suddenly sprung to life! At this point, I realized that the left carb was loose between the intake runner and head. i spent the next 20 miles holding the carb to the head with my left hand, while doing all riding with only the right.

I made it to Vernonia, and unable to find any donor bolts I zip-tied the runner to the head and "sealed" it with duct tape. I ran the air screw all the way in, and rode it home! best part? the plug looked perfect during and after the ride home.

Goddamn vibrating british twins...

Well it gave you an experience and a memory.

Love those shakedown rides!  You've far more faith than me, I keep it within 10 miles of the house for the first 200 or so.  Does make a great story though  ;D

By the way, I think the correct term is "bloody vibrating British twins".
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

Now you're set for a cross country excursion. A friend of mine ran into a lad on a Commando from Oregon last summer crossing on the ferry to Vermont. He was packed to the gills and had enough tools & parts to rebuild the engine on the road if need be.

Now that's my idea of fun...follow your nose & come what may.
