Oil level on center vs. side stand.
« on: March 24, 2010, 05:33:20 AM »
The weather finally broke here in Louisville and I gave my bike its Spring oil change.

I didn't have a way to measure the oil as the 4 liter jug had no windows or marks. I figured I could just keep adding and checking until I got a full reading.

Well, now I get a full reading when it's on the center stand, but if I check when it's on the side stand, I get NOTHING on the stick?

Is this right?

For the record, it's a 1972 CB500...

Always should check oil levels (unless the manufacturer says diff - like the HD group) with the bike in a level, upright position. (e.g. on a centre stand)

Every bike ever made is to have the oil to no more than the full mark while the bike is level

And yes on the sidestand the reading will likely not be on the stick at all.

I believe that some models of Harley Davidson are designed so that the proper oil level indicator is read with the bike positioned on the sidestand.  Honda (and most other manufacturers that I know of) never did it that way; but, just in case there is someone with a "different" bike reading these posts...its best to read the manual or check first.

Some people are also convinced that a petcock is always found on the left side of the tank, or that the rear brake light should come on with application of either the rear or the front brake.

Oh, and then there is the left-sided shift lever being universal...
