Carb Sync Tools - which one?

Hi Guys,
I'm bringing a beater (can't say Rat Bike anymore - no skulls) 750F2 back to life. I'm hoping that syncing the carbs is the final magic act that will smooth out some of the roughness per enthusiatic claims on this site. Anyway which of these two tools do I want to get? For ease of use for someone who hasn't used one before and acuracy. Actually I'd rather borrow someone else's (I'm in Oceanside, So. Cal drop me a pm if you have one locally). Keep in mind we are in a deep recession, this is a $500 bike, and I'm not going to be earning a living with this tool. (Don't recommend the $1,000 digital gold plated Snap On gizmo).

The only model I can find for 4 cylinder bikes costs $200 kiwi so I'll probably get it done by my mechanic.

Could  you use a automotive vacuum gage and do one at a time  and go back and forth?

You really can't.  To balance carbs you need to know the relative vacuum of all 4 carbs at the same time.  To adjust one carb affects the vacuum on the other three.  So trying to set one carb to a specific value that used to exist at another carb would be a never ending exercise.

You will see a lot of guys here with the Morgan Carbtune.  Cost under $100 and very reliable.  You can check it online.  Do a search on the board here and you will see it comes up a lot.

I've somehow gotten by using one of the cheapy mercury manos like in the $40 ebay auction there.  But I'm jealous of these other guys' Morgan...hehe.

On a $500 bike, a $100 tool can hurt but will this be your last bike?  Probably not.  I purchased the aforementioned mano nearly 20 years ago.  It works as good today as it did then and has been connected to a few bikes between then and now.

Make that +5 for Carbtune. Good service too. Mine arrived in about a week. Have used it on several bikes, not just 4's with good success, always. Do get the brass inserts. I didn't, and the plastic ones have worked fine, but I'm sure the brass would last and last.

  Thats the one I have and it works good for me.Its not like I am a bike mechanic so it will last me a long time! Just dont let the rubber hoses dangle onto the headpipes.

I've used the mercury manometers and still have one sitting in a dark corner of my garage.  I think it is a little short of mercury - partly from the stuff being sucked into the engine and partly due to a spill.  For the $50 difference, I'd go for the Carbtune - it'll work as well or better, last longer, and not have the toxic substance issues - think of the day when you might want to dispose of it - you'll get back more than half your money selling the Carbtune; you can't ship the mercury manometer and will likely end up taking it to a toxic waste disposal center to get rid of it.

I've used the same set of mercury filled sync gauges for 20 yrs.  8 yrs as a line tech at dealerships in CT.  I've never had to refill them or had them "suck mercury" into the engine.  You simply can't blip the throttle with them attached.  However, I see they're becoming very hard to find (likely 'cause of the mercury content)

I have the one from your first link.  It worked well for me, shipped quickly, and was fairly cheap.  I might be lying to myself but I would like to believe that it's not a uni-tasker either like I suspect the carbtune would be.

I made my own, It worked good. Used aquarium tubing, welder tips for restrictors, and bought the 5mm adapters from california sport touring. In the end, I would just buy the 40 dollar mercury off ebay. I didn't save too much, and that seems like it would work just fine.

Tubing 50 feet:         $6
3 way adapters:        $4
Restrictors:              $7
Adapters (shipped):   $15

If you figure in zip ties, and ATF fluid, it cost more, but as is, it cost $32. PAY THE EXTRA 10 BUCKS FOR THE NICE SETUP!

I just ordered a morgan carbtune now, came to just under $100 Canadian, I will let you know when it gets here and how well it works.
