Rim Width for 4.00x18 tyres?
« on: March 24, 2010, 11:39:55 AM »
I've decided to go for 18" wheels front and back for my retro 750 project.
I've just got some new 4.00x18 tyres and I'm just about to order some alloy rims and new spokes for a complete rebuild. But I'm not sure of the rim width to go for. I guess 2.5" will be correct, what do you guys think?

Stock was 2.15. I think 2.5 is a much better width, and is considered "STD" on my "woodywheelworks.com" chart for a 4.00 size tire. It will spread the tire a bit more, and look better proportioned. 2.15 is skiiiiinee.

My dansmc.com chart allows for a 2.75, but that might be better for a wider tire.

I just noticed you are downsizing the front as well? Not really retro as the 19 was the common size. Nevertheles I tried to put a 2.50 x 17 on mine and the rim width hit the brake brackets (dual discs). It may have worked with just one disc I don't know. I have since gone with a 2.15 x 18 front, looks like it will fit. The front was a 1.85 so 2.15 is bigger but not a 2.5.

A 2.5 x 18 might work but I didn't want to chance it since a 2.15 was still wider than original.
