CB350 Pipes/Mufflers
« on: March 10, 2010, 01:45:04 PM »
For those of you that were following the "NYC Slo-mo Death Watch" thread in which I saved a bird#$%*-covered abandoned CB350f from getting picked up by the trash man, you'll be happy to know that I determined the bike was never stolen, tried to contact the former owner to no avail, and now have legitimate title and ownership of the bike.

The bike is in surprisingly good condition for having been out in the elements for so long -- no rust inside the tank (though the petcock leaks and is getting a rebuild), all wiring in pretty good shape, fairly clean carbs, etc.

I haven't run it yet but that's next, with a new AGM battery and ignition switch on the way.

I'm also thinking of changing the gawd-awful rusty side-cut 4-2 mufflers (see below) with something a little more classic looking. The four header pipes are in great shape, and they just plug into the mufflers which each consist of two inputs into one can. Problem is, I can't find any mufflers out there which have the same 2-1 configuration of each one, and I'd rather not buy a whole new exhaust since the header pipes are fine.

Any ideas? I remember seeing at one point on the site that a guy had just put VW bug exhaust tips on each of the header ends. I don't want to go loud.

Any ideas are welcome.

Are there any after-market 4-2 solutions for me?

Thanks. Did the Mac slip on have two inputs for each header pipe, or was there some sort of collector that you put on to merge the two into one?

Sorry to go off topic, but how exactly were you able to obtain a valid title?

Congrats Vames on your effort. That was a fun story to follow and the bike was worth it. Those jardine slip on mufflers you have are still mounted up on thousands of 750's.I have several bikes with them, sound pretty good also. One good thing about them is they had good quality chrome and metal and can look totally trashed like yours and clean up surprisingly well. Before you pitch them give them a good cleaning and see if you still hate them. Looks like other money right now will be needed for other goodies and a first start up is in order before any major decisions.Look forward to your progress on "OPERATION GUANO"

Thanks ekpent -- it's been a pretty rewarding experience. Hopefully I'll get some time soon to do the basics to get it started. So it is a Jardine? I had no idea -- maybe I'll try and clean up the cans and see how it looks. The thing I really hate is the side-cut of the mufflers. I wish I had something like what's on this bike:

Once I get it running, if they clean up OK, I might just cut off the side-cuts and put some sort of rust inhibitor on the raw edge. I'm not going to put a heck of a lot of money into the bike if I don't need to. I kind of picture this thing with the birdsh*t cleaned off, a black tank, stock seat, 11" short shocks, forks pushed up two inches, 7" headlight with normal ears, and running really well. Call it a rat or just a beater, but that's what I like riding.

You just missed out on those pipes. I sold them to a fellow member a few months ago.

Another option: I don't see them on their site anymore but CycleX used to sell a 2-1 exhaust collector. Maybe you could find some and pair them with a cheap set of mufflers.

Megs has 2-1 collectors: http://www.coneeng.com/

I'm going to be picking a couple up for my 550. They're about $20 per IIRC.

Very interesting, and thanks for the tip on the collectors. Clearly I should get this thing cleaned up and running before I start dreaming of the right exhaust, but a man can dream, right?

Mine came with just head pipes. There was a Yamaha 750 from the 80's  in the back shed and I dug the pipes for it out. They use a collector that fits nice, and with a few welds they will be what I run unless something else comes along.  I like them because they have nice  flat spot of stainless welded on  from when the donor bike was a racer.  Nice patina, as they say.

You can find collectors around and these the 350 head tubes slip right in to the connectors from the donor bike.

Glad you got the thing in your name. And you have a question that I've been asking myself over and over and the answer keeps coming up Mac!. A new 2 into one set of flares from them is 285.00, I would really prefer the angles skyward look but I can't seem to find any collectorss that allow that kind of tilt.

Where did hoodleyhoo get those ones he sold?

My dad bought those offline in the late 90's. They are MC or MC Engineering. They haven't been made for quite some time. Your best bet to find some would be ebay but I haven't seen a set for sale for at least a year.
