76' CB750 project problems, need some advice
« on: May 04, 2010, 02:20:01 PM »
i have a 1976 CB750 project that I'm having a few issues with. any help would be appreciated.

1. the starter button needs to be replaced since the PO just glued the casing around the button together and it fell apart while i was replacing the handle bars. where might i be able to pickup a replacement button? even a cheap alternative would be fine.

2. the clutch was adjusted according to the manual but now i have a probelm. when in any gear, if i give it a quick throttle/gas on acceleration it seems to rev high before the gear engages after I've already released the clutch lever. so i almost red-line it before it slowly goes into gear and the rpms come down. any ideas?

My Starter switch for my 1976 CB750A was replaced by the previous owner with a two post switch from Radio Shack.  That switch didn't last long and my head light didn't work because the N.C. wires were never hooked back up.  To add insult to injury, the wiring is inside the handle bar tube and taped in a bundle.  I frustratingly pulled the wiring back through to the center slot in the bars and rerouted the head light wires to a push/pull switch on the fairing and mounted a $4.99 push button start switch (ACE Hardware) to a bracket off the right brake mount.  I wrapped the back of the start switch in tape and shrink tube and will install a rubber boot over the top button.  I just didn't want to pay $100.00 plus for a new start switch assembly, and mess with disconnecting the tank and throttle cables to change one out.

The starter button when pushed actually completes the ground circut. You can pull the wire through the hole  where the button should be and just touch it against the housing and it will turn over.
You can buy a new button though. They are still available. I was able to buy one from one of the local shops.  Just have them look it up on their fiche.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping.
How many miles on the bike?
What kind of oil are you using?
Is there any play in the clutch lever?
You should be able to move the lever about an 1/8th of an inch,(the thickness of a nickel).
If the cable is tight, the clutchs are not able to ingage fully.
Was the clutch working before you adjusted it?

Your clutch is definitely slipping, slacken everything off and start from scratch again. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

You could be do for a new set of clutch plates, probably ony need the fibers though.
Does the oil have any friction additives that make the oil more slippery?
If so, that will cause the clutchs to slip.
Go ahead and back the adjuster off somemore and see what happens.
You are actually in gear before you let the clutch out, it is just that your clutch is either so far gone or you have it adjusted to tight.

For your starter button I used a radio shack two-prong on my 76.  The original starter button had snapped prongs.  There are (2) types of buttons, one will constantly have juice until the button is pushed(not the one you want), the other will not have juice until the button is pushed--the type you DO want.  If soldering your wires to the prongs be careful to not overheat them--I melted the first button I fitted becaue the prongs carried the heat to the plastic.  Learned my lesson and used intermirrent heat to mount the second one.  An entire pack of 4-5 buttons was about 5 bucks.  Works likke a charm.

..... my head light didn't work because the N.C. wires were never hooked back up.

well i think i just found an answer to my next problem: way my headlight doesn't seem to work.

what exactly is the N.C. wires? negative connection? why is the headlight hooked to the starter button?

For your starter button I used a radio shack two-prong on my 76.

i cant seem to find a direct button replacement so i think I'm going to take a trip to The Shack
