CB750 890cc Engine build [Codename: Rattlesnake]

I was going to start this thread a little closer to build time, but dammit I gots pictures for lookn' at!

Let's start with some motivational eye candy, eh?

890cc kit & HD Cylinder and Main studs provided by the fine gentlemen over to Dynoman.
Cycle-X Super-Rods.
RC teflon piston pin buttons.

This build is going to have an F2 Crank/Case/Trans and a K6 Head/Cylinder block. I'll get to work on the F2 teardown this weekend and toss around some more pics. Mike Rieck has the head. Buzz, Mark 'HondaMan' and Mike Rieck have all been key to helping me get this thing off to a good start. Thank you guys for your help and support.

Looks like a nice pile of parts there.  Those Cycle X rods are pretty nice, aren't they?  Those are the ones I got too.  I was impressed.

Just for clarification, I assume that this is a 750 being up-gunned, right?

They are really nice, I was a little surprised actually when they gave me goosebumps.

Just for clarification, I assume that this is a 750 being up-gunned, right?

Yessir, stock 736cc currently.

Get a MAPP gas torch....you need some real heat. :) ;)

Get a MAPP gas torch....you need some real heat. :) ;)

I picked one up today and used it. The stud giving me the most trouble (so far) still won't budge, and it actually snapped off about 1/2" above the surface of the case. There are 4 cylinder studs that had capped nuts with copper washers and little rubber boots around the base of the studs. Those 4 studs are extremely rusty. I've only worked on one of the 4 so far, and it's the one that just snapped off. The last case I broke a sud on, I had to take to a machine shop and have them remove it. They drilled it out and didn't drill it straight so that case was wasted. Charged me $85 for my trouble.

I'm sending the top case to APE to be bored for the new sleeves. I think I'll stop before I break any more and just have the APE guys take them out. Looks like it's only $30 to have APE remove the top case studs. At this point I think that's going to be $30 well spent.

Got them all but those 4 copper top studs. See the one that broke? Those four just will not turn for me  :(

That torch made quick work of all the others though. Like butter with that bad boy. I thought welding a nut on those 4 remaining studs close to the surface would help, but I have no welder or skills to use one. I hope the guys at APE can get those buggers out. I've lost faith in using local machinists.

Seriously....you can soak those for 3 months....which I've done and then they come out with big heat. I'd send to APE  and let them handle it

I've drilled those out before, but you've got to be so careful and be right on center.  Once they get thin enough, a pipe easy out (stubby easy outs from the snap on crack truck) gets them out.  You did the right thing by stopping before you goof something up, if you were unsure.  There's no shame in that.

I had one with a lot less than that sticking up. Machine shop welded a stud onto it, heated it pretty hot (I wasn't there, thankfully) and he turned it out.

And yeah, those ain't copper. They're really rusty steel. Bout the worst I've seen.

Mike and I know all about snapping studs upon removal...in my K2 the first stud we tried snapped at the base...+2 hrs to remove the base stuck in the case.

Those 4 studs are in exactly the same place on the F2 top case that I'm working on at the moment.
The others came out with some persuassion but those 4 have got the heels dug in.
I did notice that some of the stud holes had been drilled all of the way through and those 4 are blind holes.
As they will find out, "resistance is of no use"  ;D
