I saw an old 900 piston kit on feebay and the guy had a pack of these that he was tossing in, unless they wanted regular clips and to let him know, yadda yadda. I sent him an 'Ask the seller a question' message using epay and asked if he had a set of buttons he would sell me. He asked for my paypal email, I sent it, he sent me a paypal invoice for 35.00 after shipping like an hour later. I had them in three days.

I feel like I scored.  :)

Big Jay has them guys, i got 2 sets with my nice 1000cc and 970cc forged pistons.  Look up APE engineering or CBR zone {same place}  or PM big Jay.... ;)

Impact wrench should take care of those stuck studs.  However, I would still use a full can of PB blaster on them over the course of a couple days.  The stuck one needs a little more help.

Installed a new 6008NR roller and two new HK2520 needle bearings in my primary chain sprocket shaft today. All the rest of the roller bearings are waiting for the undercut, then they'll go in. New bearings mmmmmmm so sweet.

Here is my attempt to keep garnet out of my oil line. The three oil pump holes under the oil pan are plugged too. I'll let you know how that works out for me when I get the cases back from the media blasters.

The pin end of those RC buttons measure 10mm, but the ID of the pin from that 890 kit is 9.5mm.

The last of the 'parts' I needed for the short block assembly arrived today. Here is a quick inventory of everything that's in the build drawer.



890cc 67mm piston kit w/LA Sleeve Hi Nickel sleeves.
20-CFM head and .010" steel base gasket.
Cycle-X Super Rods.
DYNA 2000 ignition with wires and 3.0 OHM coils.
HD main and cylinder studs.
HD Cam chain.
Stainless brake lines and engine hex bolts.
New 8mm and 6mm flange nuts.

Honda NOS items...
Primary chains and tensioner.
Cam tensioner/slide/wheel.
Two transmission gears
All transmission ball and needle bearings. (Except the two not available from Honda, those are both aftermarket brands.)
All gaskets. (Except the head and base gaskets mentioned above.)
all O-Rings and Oil seals.
Fork boots.

Work to be done...
L/B crank. (I have the Cobra's lightened rotor.)
Trans undercut.
Cylinders bored, sleeves installed/bored.


I'm still working on new rockers and rocker shafts. And I'll get new main bearings when the crank gets back and I can measure it. I'll worry about that after Mike's done with the stage IV on the K6 head. I decided on the Megacycle 125-75 cam. This should be a fine build with the new Kerker megaphone pipes I got last summer, and the Mikuni 29mm smoothbores. I think it has a good chance of out snaking the Cobra.

Looks great so far, that thing is going to be a beast!  What did you use to plug the oil holes?  I am taking my case to the blaster this week.  Did you end up using APE to get the broken studs out or did you take it to a local machine shop?  I live in Tacoma and can't find any good local machine shops to get my broken f2 studs out.

I will be watching this build for sure.  Thanks

I picked up a silicone plug assortment from Harbor Freight to plug the lines. It worked really well. I still have the case with the 4 stuck studs. I got another case that had the studs already removed so I wouldn't have to stress about it. It was cheap, but I'll have to start from scratch on the main bearings.

My micrometer is telling me the crank mains are 1.4175" or 36.0045mm. I was under the impression they were 36mm new, so how can they be larger than 36mm now ??? I guess maybe I have a pretty young crank and it just has .0045mm of oil on it. Does that sound reasonable? My calipers are only accurate to .00mm and according to the telescoping bore gauges the case journals are 38.95mm - 39mm avg. I have a good bore gauge on the way to re-take those case measurements before I order the bearings.

In other news... My toolbox sticker situation is improving.

Thanks for the reply.  I also picked up new cases rather than deal with the broken studs.  I am using a K case with my F internals and cylinders and heads.

I was sure I would screw those measurements up, especially with as confusing as it is and with how it was my first time. Eventually I got to a point where it was obvious I was stressing too much and way over thinking it. After much internal debate, I went with the measurements I had and ordered a full set of Black bearings.

The new main bearings came in today. I plastigaged the top and bottom of the crank journals, then sequence torqued to 16.5 lbs. with stock main bolts. all five journals on both the top and bottom read exactly .0015" dry.



Every one, not even a slight variance. I guess the bore gauge was worth it.

That's good right? I wonder if those clearances will change once the HD main studs are torqued to 20 lbs.

Why would you go up on the main stud torque?

Aren't those specced at 20 lbs.? I just assumed they were the same as the cylinder studs, I haven't actually opened them and read the instructions yet.

I finally tracked down the 30t gear I have been hunting for. I found it in the UK and had to have my brother go get it from a Honda shop there in the area. The transmission has two NOS gears because the bushing on the NOS gear to the left in this first shot had a couple nice gouges, and the mate on the countershaft had less than perfect dogs from wear. The rest of the gears are in good order. They all have visible ridges on the teeth that seem to indicate they're nice and young.


New bearings and circlips installed.




Everything moves real easy and rolls for a long time. Should perform well.

My crank, rods, top case and cylinders arrived at APE today, and the head and cam will be here before long. I could be ready for assembly in two or three weeks if everything goes my way.
