Topic: R U running pods?

I just tore most of the stuff off of my front end today and happened to notice something that was mentioned here earlier. If you ditch the stock air box and go to pod filters,there is nothing but the rubber intake manifolds holding the carbs in place. Those manifolds are real thick and they are up for the job of holding up the carbs except.......... when you crack the throttle open. I noticed the stress from opening the throttle pulls the carbs up slightly. I think it might cause a problem over time so I am thinking maybe a brace somewhere between the top of the carbs and the frame of the bike that goes over the carbs. It will keep the flex of the manifolds in check. The carbs are not in danger of just falling off of the bike.....just need something to stop the movement of the manifolds when you open the throttle. You might want to check this out if you run pod filters.

thanks breeze... while i've never had a problem with this while running pods it would be a good idea to at least check what kind of movement we are getting from a "twist of the wrist".

i think the main problem that one might encounter would not be manifold stress but, rather, carb falling out of manifold stress

I took everything off of the front except the forks and triple trees. I removed the gas tank to remove throttle cable and noticed the upward pull on the carbs as the throttle is cracked open. It hasn't hurt anything in the past couple of years that I have been running pods but I think it would be better to brace the top of the carbs to the frame. I'm looking at alot of stuff right now that I missed before. I got the pieces from Gordon (ilbikes) to remove the frame section above the top of the engine. I have been studying this setup and believe it is a great improvement for the 750. I'm not going to install this now but will be looking forward to doing it to a future project. I will continue to post up anything else I come across that might be of interest to other members.

You're right Fred, the carbs won't necessarily fall off, but they may crack the manifolds eventually, the rubbers are nice and thick on the mighty CB750, but it's common on other bikes like Z1's and big Suzuki's, I've seen it often.

I've just fitted F2 carbs on the K2 engine in my K1 (hey, it's a bitza, but I still love it!) but I fitted the OEM F2 airbox and filter, the K2 pods don't fit, but I was more interested in a brace for the carbs, the F2 items are lighter than the K1-K6 carbs, but the manifold ribbers are a bit thinner too, so more likely to crack. For that reason alone, I wouldn't recommend pods on a F2/F3 or K7/K8 unless you made up a brace. Cheers, Terry.
