750 axle lengths and wheel size
« on: March 26, 2010, 09:07:00 AM »
i am just taking off the rear wheel for the first time(on my 78 750 i picked up in oct) and as soon as the axle nut clears the last thread the rear swing arm springs open another inch so i look at the other wheel im replacing it with (and luckily it has an axle) and the one i just removed is about an inch shorter than its replacement... the wheel is an 18 that i took off of there and i suspect it a 550 wheel and was forced to fit....... so my question is... is there any way to make sure this thing will run true once on there? can i tell if it has been bent... i set the axle im going to be using in the right spot and seems to set properly.. i just dont want to waste a tire figuring out that its off or wreck the bike because its being pulled the wrong direction.... like i said it only sprung maybe a half inch to a quarter.... think its cool?

Sounds like you could have a 76 or earlier 750 wheel in there. If you do, and it has the original axle the, axle unthreaded end will be smooth and have a cross hole drilled through it.

To remedy, provided you have a 77/78 motor, or the longer sprocket shaft in an earlier engine, use a 77/78 K sprocket carrier and inner spacer, or space the sprocket out on the early carrier, and build a wheel spacer..

that makes sense the PO told me it was off a 73  and the wheel i am replacing it with is supposed to be the original.... the i think the sprocket was taken off the 78 put on the 73 rim and i have transfered it back.... any good way to assure i have things spaced correctly and running in line?

The 78 sprocket carrier is visibly wider to the eye, just add correct sprocket, and make sure the inner greasy spacer is the correct one.... proper length..

 Eirther wheel should work..

The 78 sprocket would be for a 630 chain so it would be different.
