side play in exhaust valve guides okay?
« on: March 26, 2010, 07:09:16 PM »
I found some side play in my exhaust valve guides, is there an acceptable amount of valve to valve guide movement?

Lift the valve 0.250" off the seat, measure side-to-side looseness at that lift. Honda says 0.0032" is the max allowed. Usually if they are more than 0.0060" they will cause exhaust gas blowby into the head, polluting the oil in a few hundred miles of run time. Installing new seals will help reduce that problem for a season or so, but new guides are a better bet.

If the valves get more loose than about 0.005" side-to-side, they close slowly and limit the RPM before the piston hits them for being in the way too long.  :o

Check your manual as its only a a couple of thousands per side
If you have access to gauge pins you can check the ID of the guides to the OD
of the valves and go from there.

Good luck

...change the valve guides!
I have to do the same thing :(

EDIT--> You can remove one of the intake valves and put it into the exhaust valve guide to be sure that it isn't the valve shaft.
