Almost have my 750 project finished....
« on: March 27, 2010, 12:19:40 AM »
2 years ago when I drug home a 74 Honda CB750 with a locked up motor.
This bike:

Well, I tore it down the motor was really stuck and not wanting to come loose. So I found a parts bike with a better motor
This one:

I fished chopping brackets off the frame from it and shortened it about 6 inches in my pursuit of a cafe racer.

I had a crappy little shed with no heat and the walls were too thin and gaping cracks to work in the winter, so I rolled it into the house for wiring it

Well, I didn't get it all done, but mostly. Then I moved. Had to do a LOT of remodeling on the house, still not done. But work on the bike is coming now and then.
Finally got the bodywork and paint done. This is the tins before clearcoat:

Also drilled the rear brake drum, but no pics of that right now.

Finally tonight the bug bit my ass hard, so I finished what was left of the wiring (had to go to an automotive starter solenoid) factory one crapped out and this was easier with my connections.
Now everything is there and working.
Will be ordering my brake line kit this week. Then need grips and my seat pan upholstered.

Tomorrow I might get brave and try putting some gas in it....

So, here it is as of midnight tonight:

Cool paint and nice vintage look. That will be a blast to ride when you are done.

Keep posting.

Good luck,
Bill

Looks slick....Can you elaborate a bit on the headlight?  Aftermarket generic or from a specific model?

I can't tell you too much about it.
Its off a little 125ish Suzuki bike from the 70's I believe.   Found it in a bike junkyard a while back. At first I thought it was ruined with the flat side, but then I saw it from the front and fell in love. They had 3 others just like it, but they all had nasty diggers to the headlights so I just bought this one.

Does it have a tach inside it?

I'm not sure why....

But that looks very lean, mean, and sexy.

I love that tail piece.  Who made it?  I'm looking for something kind of similar.    Can't wait to see it 100%!

I made the tail.  Its the back half of an old Kawasaki dirt bike gas tank.  Had the Honda tank sitting on the back of the bike one day and got the idea.
The next trip to the junk yard there was the Kawi tank sitting there with the perfect curve and width.

I wish I had more pics of making it, but I was so into building that I forgot to take any.

I didn't think about looking at dirt bike tanks.  They do have the right shape though.  Time to find the local motorcycle cemetery.  Thanks  ;-)

Good to see some scallops once in a while.   Looks great - nice vintage feel to it.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Finally got brave and put gas in the bike today.
Took a bit of cranking but it fired of and runs. Thinking I need to find someone better with setting timing on factory ignition than myself, to get it tuned in correct.

Every now and then it would throw some sparks out the exhaust, unsure what that's about, hoping it's nothing tragic!

Any Denver area people willing to come lend a hand I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hey all. I've got it 99% done now. ivory/white tuck-n-roll seat and brake line. Need to fab up my license plate bracket and fuss with the timing a bit more.

Can anyone give me a link to a good step by step on timing? Maybe with some pictures?  I've read the service manual on how to do it a couple of times and for some reason can't quite figure out how to go about setting dwell and such.
Obviously I'm close,, it runs, just need to tune it in the rest.

Also,  i've noticed that my oil drains down into the motor pretty quick after shutting it off. Is this typical or trouble?
