Bill, you know how one gets recognized as the "guy" on certain subjects. Same as how I got my 1968 GTS. A guy beat on my door one Sunday morning and said "I hear you're into old Dodges. I need cash. Wanna buy a old Dart?" Turned out to be a 1968 383 auto GTS his brother had sold him and he never even registered it or drove it. Sat in his driveway for a year or more until he needed money.
So this one guy calls a while back and says, "I hear you're into Honda 750s?" Want some? You got a truck?" I said that I could lay my hands on a pickup pretty easily. He said, "Well yeah that wold work, but you should probably get a 5 or 10 ton and do it in one trip. The guy was cleaning out three houses he owned and him and his brother had collected CB750s since the mid 70s. The brother was out west and no longer had any interest in them and the owner just wanted the stuff gone to sell the houses. I rented a 5 ton and the stuff just barely fit inside it. Floor to roof, stem to stern SOHC stuff. Took me nearly three weeks to catalog and file the stuff away when I got it home.
Its funny because after doing the CB900 last year, I was hoping to do a Tracey bodied SOHC this winter. After searching and checking prices from locally to eGouge on the body itself, I realized that using a 1982-1983 Nighthawk would probably be cheaper in the long run. The Tracey bodies were fetching big coin, and given the amount of mods I was planning to do to it, a Nighthawk had the same basic style I was going for and I thought would be cheaper. HA!
So now possibly after the Nighthawk, and one of the 1981 Ks that I used for parts for the Nighthawk and will bobber what's left - maybe I'll get back to the SOHCs. The plan is to do one for each year 1971-1978 Ks plus the 1975-1978 F series. I've got a least one of each of them in parts. The K2 and K3 are well in hand, the F3 is done and the K1 is awaiting frame paint and it can be a roller right fast. All its sub-assemblies are done. Time is what I need. The DOHCs are more of the fun thing in that I don't care that they aren't factory correct like the SOHCs. One of the sad things is that I'm using a lot of the SOHC pieces on the DOHCs - because I am more attached to the SOHC series and familiarity is nice. Shocks, taillights, blinkers, other stuff - all SOHC fare. The Nighthawk will be using my spare set of K1 switches and other "more desirable" pieces. And the 1981K bobber/whatever will be mainly a DOHC engine clad in K2 clothing and that combo rodded. Why? Just because. I got the parts.
