another guitar amp thread
« on: March 28, 2010, 01:53:23 PM »
does anyone here own a Kustom brand amplifier? i'm selling the fender fm212r i have because i just have no reason at all to have such a large amplifier, the thing could make my neighbors wet their beds if i turned it all the way up  :D  i was looking at one of the smaller Kustom hybrid amps and i was just wondering if anyone knows anything good or bad about them? the model i'm looking at is brand new and i havent been able to find any reviews about it online.

1 8" speaker at 18w
when it comes to amps size means alot
if you can work with the sound then it's a fine amp
but i think you will be disappointed as time go's on

i've gotten fed up with the monster fender i have. it's a pain in my ass to have to drag it out when i want to play. 2x12's and 100 watts.

what are you gonna do with it?  planning on playing a stadium show anytime soon?   an 18 watt amp is perfect for a practice amp. and its a tube amp looks cool to me although ive never played through one.

When I was in high school I used to have a first generation eddie van halen peavey 5150, as soon as I graduated I wised up to low wattage class A amps. I'm currently using a great 17w Goodsell Super Seventeen. It's a class A point to point and sounds excellent. Just the right amount of watts so you can really push it hard and get power tube drive.

if i could afford to get the new amp and keep the fender i would, but the 212r has to go so i can get something smaller, and pay a few bills with the extra.

here is another one i've been considering, not a bad price for an all tube vox amplifier. the sound is sooooo sweet. cant beat that vintage vox tone. i'm driving up to the charlotte guitar center tomorrow to check out a bunch of amps, see if i can make a decision.

I have two Kustom amps, an old silver t&r 50 watt(solid state rating c.1969) and a quad 65dfx
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/guitar_amplifiers/kustom/quad_65_dfx/index.html
that I bought used on ebay for $140. Both have a single 12" speaker.

Maybe Magnatone made a better vibrato, but the old Kustom one works great too, otherwise it's pretty bright and brittle sounding, but with the tone control(s) pretty much turned down on a strat set in between pickups I can get a decent organ sound out if it on occasion.

The newer Quad is a good all around amp. It does a creditable clean sound and has a pretty workable overdrive sound as well. Effects are good although you can only access one at a time. I mostly just use a little short delay, and could live with it full time if it was the only amp I had.  It'll also get pretty loud as it has a boost switch, but using it for prolonged periods will trip a thermal switch when it overheats, at least I think that's what happens with mine. It is nice and light and not too big so I use it occasionally as a rehearsal amp. I've had it for 3 or 4 years and it hasn't screwed up yet. Hope this helps!

I wish I could help you out but I do agree that 100 watts is not worth much unless you are clubbing and even then it might be questionable.
I have been in a DIY kick on making guitars and even amps and much of the stuff I find seems to indicate that for jamming use in your home, 18-20 watts is about perfect. You on average have better sound than the smaller amps, usually better components, and if you do take it out, it will work alright for smaller clubs unless you got some guy pushing around 100watts.  From what some of these guys also say, a 100 does not really give you that much over a 50.

I dont have most of my bookmarks right now as they are on a different pc but here is one I do have.

Seems to be very good info and a little digging will find you on their forum site.

There is a local couple making furniture grade amps, I can't find their web site though. Some look like antique radios.

i've been offered a Vox ac15C1 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Vox-Custom-AC15C1-15W-1x12-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp-105806491-i1517163.gc in trade for the fender amp i'm selling and a multi effects box. as soon as i know more about this amplifiers history i'll either get it or keep shopping.

still looking, it needed to be re-tubed and i'm not looking to get an amp and then have to work on it. i'm still driving up to charlotte to the guitar center there (closer to me than any of the ones here in SC) with my Danelectro and i'm going to play through every amplifier in the 100-250 dollar price range. i got 250 for the frontman 212r this evening so it's time to go amp shopping. i dont know as i'll get the Kustom branded hybrid i mentioned at the beginning of this thread but the more i learn about them, the more i like the idea of a hybrid amplifier.

If you can, I would hold out and buy an all tube amp. The hybrids are just clever way for people to think they are getting tube tone for solid state price. If you search ebay you can possibly get a used fender blues junior (15 watter true, but they are tube watts which your ears perceive as louder than solid state watts) in the $400 dollar range. For the price it will sound 100% better than 99% percent of solid state amps in. But also this is all coming from a tone nut who has toured. If your just a bedroom player the solid state is perfectly alright.

try some nail polish remover maybe. dont soak it, and rub gently. maybe heating it with a hair dryer a little might help too

something came up today when this young man came by to check out the amplifier, he hadnt brought his own guitar and though i did let him use one of my guitars (the frankenstrat) i wasnt very comfortable with it. i guess i feel like my guitars are a very personal thing, i've never asked to use someone elses guitar. how about ya'll?

I have the guitars i use regularly tuned all different, one is DADGCD and one is tuned in regular tune but down a full step and a half, it also has 60-12 strings on it and a slightly higher action, really screws with people's heads with the different tunings as most people tune to regular "E" {440 tuning}.
I just LOVE low actions as i have small hands and play lead quite fast and it helps make it a bit easier....

i have my SG tuned half a step down because alot of REM songs are played in that tuning. the Danelectro has super light 8-38 strings, the strat has 9-42's and the sg has 9-38

Might be a good idea to remove the chassis from the cab first before using solvents on the tolex. If it doesn't work, you can always buy some tolex and contact cement and replace it, or just live with it.
