new 750 rebuild. Clutch? Neutral?
« on: March 29, 2010, 03:02:03 PM »
I just got my newly rebuilt 750K5 motor back in the frame this weekend. I put my chain on today and thought I would find neutral, so I could statically time the thing, but no such luck. I rocked back and forth but still could not find it. At that time it dawned upon me that my clutch lever was pulled in, and my rear wheel was not moving. Few things things to note:

Clutch cable has been adjusted properly and feels appropriate. Clutch cover is only side-cover screwed in.

No engine oil.

Selector shifts through gears. Kick-starter moves final drive.

Any ideas? I am perplexed.

With the transmission cover off you should be able to see when the neutral stopper aligns with the notch at the end of the shifter drum.

I checked and the drum stops rotating just short of the neutral stopper. Hmm

I have been messing with the selector for a good hr and I cannot figure out what happened. Before I married the cases everything shifted appropriately. and this morning I could shift up and down, but now that I am trying to establish neutral, I cant even change gears. It's like the drum has moved to a place where the selector arm does not meet up with the posts, (for lack of appropriate terms). Am I totally screwed? The thought of tearing this motor down again is almost unthinkable. Might it help to reassemble the external shift apparatus? Could that free up the drum? I cannot see where it would be caught up on.

Try rotating the the engine a bit while you shift. I think the gearbox has to have some movement in order to shift through all the gears and into neutral. I've never been able to shift through all the gears on a motor that was not running.

I have been kicking it over while manipulating the the shifter to no avail. Do you think it could be due to the fact that the motor lacks oil?

Assume you oiled up the internals while assembling? If you did not you should take it apart if only for that reason. I know it's a pain but you can remove only the lower half of the case, leaving the motor intact, to access the transmission. I am by no means the smartest guy here- but if you can't get the drum to rotate to neutral you've got an issue you need to resolve prior to firing it up. Good luck!

Internals were slathered with plenty of assembly lube. I think it has something to do with the clutch not disengaging.

Ok. I took apart my clutch and put it back together. The clutch doesn't work still, but the selector seems to be working. I can get the neutral stopper into the notch, but the motor is still in gear, or the clutch is somehow keeping everything coupled, because the rear wheel still rotates the engine.

I rocked back n' forth for a good 5 min and finally got it working! I assumed since the plates were not stuck together when I installed them, that they would not be so once installed. Never assume!
