550 F Dual Disc setup
« on: March 22, 2013, 01:20:31 PM »
I know there are a ton of threads on this but the original article on the soch4.net homepage is down and a lot of the threads no longer have working picture on them. So here it goes:

According to this picture:

The hub itself has flats that I need to modify the speedo drive to fit into. However my hub with the disc looks like this:

So what gives? The first picture is a 750 wheel I believe but I've read in other threads the 550 wheel is also supposed to have the flats for the speedo drive to fit into. What do I do without them?

Thanks for any help

yes, those were iggy's 750 rotors/hub.  i followed his thread closely when doing my conversion on my 750.
whats the other side of your 550 hub look like?

This is the other side of the hub. Looks normal to me:

I think the 77-78 hubs for the 550 didn't have the cut outs... I'm in the process of cutting them into the hub and then modifying the drive to lay flat on the hub. Bad idea?

post up a pic of your speedo drive plate, and the side of the hub (without rotor) that it fits too...
just thinking if the speedo drive plate has flanges that fit against the hub, the rotor could be milled/routed to fit, instead of modifying the hub...

This is how it would mount up stock... without the second rotor

I don't think the rotor could be modified to fit around the drive without making the inside diameter of the rotor bigger which would be hard to do... I think the best bet is to cut the flat sides into the hub and then cut the drive to fit flat against it with tabs in the flat sides like the 750 picture in my first post.

perfect.  just what i thought.
the cleanest way to do this is to have the insides of your rotor carrier routed to fit the 'ears'

check Steve F's first post in this thread... 2nd and third pictures in his post

i see what you're saying.  ID of the carrier would have to be enlarged.
have another hub you can use that you dont have to modify?

Yeah that is super clean looking. Thanks for the help Flybox... The funny thing is that this is my second 550 hub after messing my first one up taking the bearing out without the right tools ($200 mistake after buying a new wheel and having a pro swap the tire and bearings) and neither of my hubs have the cut outs.

Nothing is ever easy

Thanks again

you might want to PM member Godffery.
He does a lot of rotor work/modification, specifically for race and twin disc setups. 550's and 750's.
he's probably worked through this before.  nice guy to work with. i purchase his great rotors for my 750...

I bought one of these adapters from a forum member (can't remember who......anyone know who is/was selling these?).

You have to drill and tap the hub, but it works perfectly.

Clinto, I still have a couple of these and their mounting screws on hand. If you want a set, just PM me. Thanks!  RR

If I would have saw that yesterday it would have saved me a lot of trouble. I'd heard someone made these but I thought they were extinct. I ended up cutting flats into the hub and modifying the drive to fit in. Thanks for the heads up though, I'm sure someone will be needing them
