.....the po had too much non threaded stud sticking out of manifold and was compensating with cupped washers and thick rubber washers so not a lot of pressure was put on carbs.

There are two versions for mounting the carb to the manifold, and both are designed to eliminate vibration.  Webers are never mounted 'hard' to the manifold.  One uses a cup washer and rubber grommet (looks like two cones back to back, that's what I use); the other a spring and washer.  there are also two versions of the 'gasket' that goes between the carb and manifold.  One is a ring with o-rings on both sides; the other o-rings mounted in alloy (my choice).  The trick is to tighten everything down using a crisscross pattern, enough to seal, but still have some flexibility to kill vibration.

I have 3 sets on manifolds, pretty sure they are all hard mounted.. Bob pm if you need the  intake rubber connectors.. Only come in blue..

My carbs are hard mounted to the manifold. I figure the intake rubbers provide the vibration isolation. Also, my support at the rear of the carbs has rubber where it clamps to the frame.

Just saying....the way I described is the correct method, but then all my manifolds (including the XS) have been hard bolted to the engine.  I'll give you that the intake rubbers on a motorcycle will provide vibration isolation.  And yes, with intake rubbers you will need to support them.  Otherwise they will droop from the weight, and screw up the float level.  I would still use the soft mount (P/N 99005.146 / http://www.piercemanifolds.com/category_s/306.htm) to get a positive air seal.

Yes I know that the mounting rubbers and washers I have taken off are proper mounting but I would have to modify studs to stop them from running out of thread when tightened so I saw a side view of scottlys carbs on this thread using bolts and it looked more compact and it must serve him well with the miles he does.I agree that they should be tightened evenly and with only enough force to seal them the mounting gaskets that came with them look are metal core with a soft rubber like coating to seal.it is all about learning for me bill

Why not just buy shorter studs, or (easy fix) just add some threads to the existing ones with a die??  You mentioned they are a bit long, so add the thread to the manifold side of the stud.

I use a bolt & nyloc along with the cup/rubber washer setup, & soft mount gasket on the XS.

So I just purchased a copy of the R.C. manifold from a member here. Since it doesn't use the stock honda rubbers to mount to the intake, I was wondering what you guys were using to mount them. I have heard of people either using radiator hose or silicon hose of some sort. Just wondering if you guys had a specific type that you used.

Here are a couple of pics of a original RC manifold and the copy that I got. I measured a stock set of honda carbs with the manifold on and it seems the distances are much different from my RC manifold. I guess I can see if someone I know has a spare set of rubbers I can mock it up with.

I think its more it was cast as two different pieces then welded together. I think the welded spot is making it look closer together than the original one. Though they are probably very close if not exactly the same.

Honestly I don't have an original one, so I can measure the manifold I have but unless someone has measurements from an actual one its hard to tell.

Scottly Im not sure about the narrowing of the manifold as the carbs are so close allready the throttle shafts have to be cut to get the carbs mounted ...almost touching

Its very easy to break the manifold  in half  or the cable mount wings while putting them into the head  mounting rubbers...........ask me ::)

Yah I guess I wasn't super clear there, those are two different manifolds. One is a actual RC manifold and the other is the copy that was cast in two pieces and welded together.

Quick update on the jetting in the 40DCOE on the sidecar.

Mains - 135 / Airs 175 / Emulsions F11.  Nice tan centre.  Now idles (50F9's) @ 1500 without loading up.  No flat spots, and pulls red line+.
